College Prowler Take
Middlebury is home to some of the best sports teams in Division III. In fact, the Nordic and Alpine ski teams have won the Eastern Intercollegiate Skiing Association (EISA) championship, and are not only good enough to be promoted to Division I standing, but often annihilate teams in this ranking. Men’s ice hockey reigns supreme as far as student popularity. Football is surprisingly not as popular as many sports, but the team can still play with the best of them. Furthermore, IM sports teams, such as ultimate Frisbee, are particularly renowned for their raucousness and flagrant sexual debauchery on the weekends. The ski teams and the women’s ice hockey team remain the most overlooked, despite their skill. If you want to train in some of the most state-of-the-art athletic facilities in the country, Middlebury’s your school. If you want to play with some of the most driven, hard-working, and talented athletes in the country, Middlebury’s your school. And if you simply want to take part in an IM here or there, Middlebury has plenty of those, too. When it comes to athletics, it would suffice to say we’ve got it all—except for a Division I standing in most sports.

Basically, everyone who is normal on campus is an athlete or was an athlete before they came to Middlebury. There is a huge void in social life when certain sports start their seasons.

I would say that the school and...
I would say that the school and social life does not revolve that much around sports, but you can definitely see some changes during different seasons. Ice hockey is huge at Middlebury—the town always collapses when there is a game. Our gym is great, as well. We have sensational facilities for everyone—a pool, fields, golf course, and indoor fields. A lot of athletes are also part of IM sports.

As a member of the softball team...
As a member of the softball team here, I will admit that it is not extremely rigorous, but it is a great break within the day, and it is how I have met some of my closest friends. You feel like a big-time player without the commitment of your life and your body.

Hockey is king at Middlebury....
Hockey is king at Middlebury. Games are usually well attended, and if you’re interested, hockey fans have a whole subculture of their own. Ultimate Frisbee is the other really popular option here, and the team members form a tight group who like to have a good time. |

I didn’t realize it when I applied, but Middlebury really is a jock school! Athletics are quite popular, and many students play a sport. Even if they aren’t involved officially, Midd kids are known for taking advantage of the surrounding mountains to ski and hike. |

Gyms and Facilities
- Chip Kenyon ’85 Arena - This is the College’s hockey arena, which seats 2,600 spectators. It is immaculate and boasts a 3,200-square-foot lounge overlooking the Green Mountains. Frankly, it looks like a NCAA Division I arena.
- Memorial Field House (includes Pepin Gymnasium and Nelson Recreation Center) - The Memorial Field House is one of the relatively older athletic complexes on campus, but considering the others are brand new, it’s still fairly young and quite impressive. In the gym, you’ll find basketball courts, gymnastic mats, and flights of wooden bleachers. In the Rec Center, which is home to the annual Winter Carnival Ball, there is room for three tennis, badminton, or volleyball courts and one state-of-the-art climbing wall.
- Natatorium - Middlebury’s Olympic-sized swimming pool is designed to perfection, and boasts 18 lanes, four diving boards, and a couple of lifeguards waiting with water wings around the clock. The locker rooms and showers are also spacious, clean, and private. There are even two machines that will ring out your bathing suit for you in a matter of about 10 seconds!
- Ralph Myhre Golf Course - As if a mountain was not enough, Middlebury also owns a golf course. Built in the 1930s, it was expanded to 18 holes in 1978.
- Rikert Ski Touring Center - Located 12 miles east of Middlebury on Route 125, the Ski Touring Center offers 42 kilometers of prepared trails. The facility provides picturesque and challenging trails for every level of ability.
- Snow Bowl - The Snow Bowl offers 110 acres of open terrain for skiers and snowboarders only 15 minutes from campus. Owned by the College, it serves as the primary training ground for Middlebury’s ski teams and also offers cheap rentals and lift tickets for Middlebury students, faculty, and the public. With three lifts, 15 trails, and a beautiful lodge complete with cafeteria, the Snow Bowl feels more like a small resort than a college ski mountain.
- The Field House Bubble - “The Bubble” includes an indoor track, squash, and tennis courts, and is another excellent facility.
- The Fitness Center - The College’s Fitness Center is like a bustling student hub of sorts, filled with super-posh urbanites all in a race to get skinny (and read their textbooks while doing it). All of the machines are attractive and, most importantly, functional. Here you can do anything from weight training to rowing to working out on the elliptical or the stair machine, all while watching cable television! Middlebury cardholders can bring one guest any time of the week.
- Youngman Field at Alumni Stadium - This turf field is home to the football team during the fall and the men’s lacrosse team come spring. The stadium seats 3,500 spectators and offers Middlebury’s best views of the Green Mountains and outdoor athletic facilities.

Getting Tickets
The only tickets that seem to be in relatively high demand are tickets to men’s ice hockey games. You may need to purchase tickets ahead of time if you’re looking at the NESCAC championships. Normally, students never have a problem getting into regular season games, even at the last minute. Tickets are free for students and cost $2 during the NESCAC finals.
Most Popular Sports
It only makes sense that Vermont’s top teams would be involved in the cold sports like Nordic and Alpine skiing and ice hockey. Watching men’s and women’s lacrosse is also popular once the weather starts to get warmer.
Most Overlooked Teams
The women’s ice hockey team is continually under-praised for all of the national championships it has won. The swim team is also spectacular and often unrecognized.
Best Place to Take a Walk
Down to Otter Creek and through the Marble Works (downtown), around the golf course, on the paths leading from Proctor down to the Ridgeline development (best on a snowy evening), around the Bread Loaf campus and on its cross-country trails
