Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Middlebury is home to some of the best sports teams in Division III. Men’s ice hockey reigns supreme as far as student popularity. Football is surprisingly not as popular as many sports, but the team can still play with the best of them. Furthermore, IM sports teams, such as ultimate Frisbee, are particularly renowned for their raucousness and flagrant sexual debauchery on the weekends. The ski teams and the women’s ice hockey team remain the most overlooked, despite their skills.

If you want to train in some of the most state-of-the-art athletic facilities in the country, Middlebury’s your school. If you want to play with some of the most driven, hard-working, and talented athletes in the country, Middlebury’s your school. And if you simply want to take part in an IM here or there, Middlebury has plenty of those, too. When it comes to athletics, it would suffice to say we’ve got it all—except for a Division I standing in most sports.

Great Fan Base, and Easy to Get Involved

The Varsity sports scene makes it pretty fun to be a fan, especially in the winter when you can watch Basketball and Hockey, two of Midd's best sports. Fans get pretty intense, especially if teams do well---which they usually do. As far as student involvement goes, a huge percentage of the student body are athletes; it's a very athletic and active campus. It's super easy to get involved with sports at the club level, like crew, rugby, etc., even if you've never played before. Intramurals are also super fun, and really easy to get involved in.

Divisive

Middlebury campus population is split between jocks and non-jocks and there's little mixing between the two groups. It can make for a strange atmosphere sometimes.

The Town's Teams

Middlebury sports events in general are not well attended. The men's hockey games draw the biggest crowds, but a large majority of the spectators are townies. That being said, the sports teams are an important part of the campus scene. Middlebury teams are close-knit and party together. Middlebury teams are typically strong, and recently, both Hockey teams, men's basketball and the women's cross country have been particularly good. The men's rugby team, a club team, also has a large presence on campus. This is partially because they're coming off of a recent national championship win, but also because their team is HUGE. I mean, I swear they have more players than the football team. Intramural sports are not a huge deal. When students have more time during J-term, more participate in intramurals.

Most Popular Sports

It only makes sense that Vermont’s top teams would be involved in the cold sports like nordic and alpine skiing and ice hockey. Watching men’s and women’s lacrosse is also popular once the weather starts to get warmer.

Most Overlooked Teams

Swimming and diving, tennis, rugby, skiing, basketball, squash, golf, women's ice hockey

School Spirit

Middlebury College is just small enough to foster a substantial amount of school spirit. It is particularly prominent during ice hockey games and around Winter Carnival time. School spirit is also prominent during Homecoming weekend. Yet, it’s sustained the whole year through with kids donning Middlebury logos and apparel. Sometimes Middlebury kids can come off as a bit too pretentious about their school.

Getting Tickets

The only tickets that seem to be in relatively high demand are tickets to men’s ice hockey games. You may need to purchase tickets ahead of time if you’re looking at the NESCAC (New England Small College Athletic Conference) championships. Normally, students never have a problem getting into regular season games, even at the last minute. Tickets are free for students and cost $2 during the NESCAC finals.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Down to Otter Creek and through the Marble Works (downtown), around the golf course, on the paths leading from Proctor down to the Ridgeline development (best on a snowy evening), around the Bread Loaf campus and on its cross-country trails
