This campus is not host to screaming hoards of security officers and other whistleblowers by any means. Quite frankly, you’ll get away with drinking and even more if you are halfway discreet about it. Oftentimes, security officers are too busy busting parking offenders and criminal Christmas light-stringers to be bothered with all of the underage debauchery. Everyone knows that it’s rampant, particularly on weekends, and security hardly has the numbers to make a dent in the drunkenness. If you are stupid about breaking policy, however, you will, and deserve to be, caught. Acts of vandalism and bike theft (or “borrowing,” as Middlebury students like to call it) are considered more serious offenses and are punished accordingly.

A helpful hint: if you would like to host a party, register it first, or you will run the risk of getting busted for an informal, overly boisterous booze fest. Also, if you’re one of those people incorrigibly in love with illegal substances, at least make an attempt to keep the use of them restricted to your room by closing the door. Security knows what pot smells like, too, and will not buy the “medicinal purposes” argument. It’s already been tested.

Not Very Strict...

While Middlebury likes to think they are pretty strict about drinking, I don't think they are. In order to get a citation for drinking underage, you have to be holding alcohol (so just set it down as soon as an officer enters the party). They start to really crack down at 3 citations and send you to an alcohol education class. After 5 I think you get sent home, but I'm not positive. The issues that have been more prevalent this year have been campus vandalism. We racked up a large bill this year in dented walls, uprooted trees and shattered lights. Luckily nothing serious happened, but needless to say the administration was not happy.

Strictness

Middlebury has a very laid back administration when it comes to visitors and other things. It's pretty hard to get in trouble for underage drinking and you have a lot of chances before you face serious consequences

Hit or Miss

Even after I've graduated, I still can't figure out Midd's pub safe (public safety). They were hardasses at some parties, but then you could schmooze them at the next and get into no trouble at all. Definitely gets easier after freshman year, and no "real" cops are allowed on campus.

Midd does have a reputation for not changing some pretty questionable things, like having no pass/fail options or giving the same credit to a course that is 10 hrs/week versus 3 hrs/week. These rules can get frustrating if they affect you.
