Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The use of drugs at Middlebury is noticeable but not prevalent. Popular drugs, such as marijuana or prescription “study drugs,” are easily obtained and used by many, while hard drugs such as cocaine are more difficult to find. Most students would not consider themselves part of the drug crowd. Even if they do, they are so focused on success both in academics and extracurricular activities that only a small amount of their time and money is spent on drugs.

Most students at Middlebury drink, although the quantities of alcohol imbibed vary widely depending on the person and context. Alcohol is abundantly available for underage students. That being said, except for possibly feeling some awkwardness, there is hardly any peer pressure on those who choose to abstain from drugs and/or alcohol. Your decision to remain sober will be respected and rarely questioned, as Middlebury students consider uniqueness an important and valuable quality. In addition, if a party full of drunk people is not your scene, there are plenty of other events—Free Friday Films, concerts, and performances—taking place on campus on the weekends.

I Don't Really See It--Drinking Much More Popular

I'm sure hard drug use is somewhat present, but all I've really come in contact with is weed, which is easy to avoid if you'd rather. It's not a central aspect of student life though, and it's not a pressured situation at all. No peer pressure. Drinking is definitely a much more popular activity.

No Worries

Middkids don't do drugs. If they smoke the occasional pot it is on the DL and I've never been in a situation where I was around anyone using drugs or felt the need/pressure to participate. Drinking is common; drug use isn't. Nobody gets themselves into trouble with drugs mostly because there are so few people partaking.

Drugs Are There If You Search for Them

I don't look for drugs and so I don't see them. I prefer alcohol and there is a lot of drinking done on campus. Maybe I saw some people snorting cocaine once or twice.
