College Prowler Take

Older buildings and furniture have been left standing around Middlebury’s campus to preserve the charming, antique feel, but they’ve been restored and modernized throughout the years to complement the new facilities that continue to be added. Middlebury’s athletic facilities are impeccable, the student center is cushy and beautiful, the Center for the Arts looks like a modern masterpiece, and a large library was completed just a few years ago. As if that weren’t enough, Bicentennial Hall (BiHall)—the science building—offers state-of-the-art laboratories and lecture halls for science majors, and the Axinn Center at Starr Library has technologically smart classrooms, multiple media rooms, and a seniors-only study that eminates an Ivy-league feel—think intricate wood paneling, marble fireplaces, and overstuffed antique chairs. The Grille is the only food option besides the dining halls; the Juice Bar, the Grille, and Wilson Café are the only after-hours beverage options; and MiddXpress is the only convenience store on campus and can be quite expensive.

At first glance, Middlebury is overwhelming—not in size, but in the fact that there is so much to do, you’ll never get the time to take full advantage of it. While you have the opportunity to spend each day swimming in the pool, running on the pristine rubber track, checking out concerts on stage in the Juice Bar, and spending a lot of time in BiHall’s observatory, you’ll never have the time to do everything you want. However, if only in response to being surrounded by 2,500 other busybodies, you’ll fill your days with as many worthwhile activities as possible. There are plenty of options at Middlebury.

There have been a lot of renovations and new buildings added in the past several years. The library, Science Center, and Center for the Arts are all fairly new, and we just renovated the old library, Proctor Dining Hall, and McCullough Student Center. The architecture, with a few exceptions, is very typical of an old New England college.

The facilities are all really nice and new. I don’t often go to the athletic complex, but when I do, it is always clean, looks like new, and has everything you could ever want. The computers are all fairly new and work well. They are scattered around campus so you can usually find one. The student center is nice and has everything that you might really need, as well—a store, restaurant, study room, social hall, mailroom, and other stuff as well. The buildings are really confusing until you get familiar with them, but you will adapt to them quickly.

Middlebury’s facilities are unbelievably, even excessively, beautiful. I especially appreciate the Grille and the student center, which is a nice, alternative place for studying and meeting friends.

The athletic facilities are the best I’ve seen at any small college, especially the natatorium and the fitness center. The computer labs and student center are also above average.

The facilities are on the cutting edge! The sports complex is befitting of a larger university, and the science complex is huge and technologically advanced.

What To Do on Campus

On the weekdays, when you’re not spending your free time complaining to your friends about how much homework you have, you’ll most likely find yourself lounging at the Grille with some greasy food. Many thick-skinned individuals will round up friends to go sledding in front of Mead Chapel during the winter. Internationally-recognized guest speakers, such as renowned political figures and poets, also make frequent appearances at the Robert A. Jones ’59 House and Mead Chapel on weekday afternoons. On the weekends, popular outings include “Free Movie Fridays” in Sunderland International Language Center, taking a trip into Burlington, on-campus student plays and music, arts performances in the Center for the Arts, on-campus concerts, and sporting events. Friday nights are home to Middlebury’s student-run “nightclub” known as the Bunker, which features student DJs, sweaty dancing, and cheap alcohol.

Favorite Things To Do

Before you judge Middlebury students, getting hammered at social houses and dancing half naked at McCullough parties isn’t all we enjoy doing. During one of our favorite nights of the year, Winter Carnival, we boast much more class than that—we get drunk in our best duds. Nothing goes better with shots of Jim Beam than a sharp tie, a velvet dress, and a slew of silver streamers. Midd kids tend to gravitate toward student plays, which normally go up in the Hepburn Zoo, and free movie Fridays in Sunderland International Language Center’s main auditorium. Student talent shows are also a must see; yet, to the dismay of some, they often don’t present any opportunity for heckling. Mainly, Middlebury is the ideal locale for enjoying outdoor activities, from swimming in Lake Dunmore to skiing at Bread Loaf or down the Snow Bowl. Middlebury students are quite athletic, for the most part. Middlebury also boasts a lot of musical talent, and there are often free student band or a capella performances.
