College Prowler Take
What Middlebury lacks in downtown nightlife it nearly makes up for in on-campus entertainment, and that’s saying something, considering the town is totally dead after 10 p.m. There are three bars in town, and no clubs to speak of. Bars typically begin closing around midnight, and the nearest entertainment alternatives are a 50-minute drive north. The town is extremely conservative when it comes to noise-making and all types of partying. On the other hand, the College is sympathetic to a student’s need to forget all of the weekdays’ cares on the weekend. In light of this, the Middlebury College Activities Board (MCAB) and other student organizations often sponsor bands, parties, and famous entertainers on Fridays and Saturdays. There are always plays, instrumental concerts, dance performances, and other such events held in the Center for the Arts (CFA) and in other venues around campus, as well. As for the after-party, dorm room debauchery and drinking is rampant, and social houses hold raucous, yet often lame, beer blowouts nearly every weekend. If you don’t plan on bringing a car to campus during your time at Middlebury, you may begin to feel extremely claustrophobic by sophomore year. The excitement of beer and grinding with sweaty strangers tends to wear off rather quickly, and everyone’s ready to explore a more varied social scene after awhile. Drinking in a 4’x4’ room with your friends never loses its charm, but you’ll probably be chomping at the rural bit to get away to Burlington at least a few times a month.

There are a few "social scenes" on...
There are a few "social scenes" on campus. Students who have similar interests tend to party together, and there are plenty of venues to do so from suites to off-campus housing. Athletic teams tend to take the place of traditional Greek life in that they host most of the bigger on-campus and house parties. There are a few bars in town, but they are, obviously, 21-plus. There are also options on campus for people who choose not to drink.

Parties on campus can be hit or...
Parties on campus can be hit or miss. Regardless, there is always something going on. Parties can range from keggers in the on-campus houses to overcrowded dance parties on senior suites. Since many students are on an athletic team, the parties that teams throw are usually considered a good place to end up. If, unfortunately, the night comes to an early end—say, before 2 a.m.—everyone ends up at the on-campus restaurant, the Grille, and orders one of the drunk favorites: The Godfather or Doctor FeelGood, among others.

Parties can range from crazy nude...
Parties can range from crazy nude parties to lazy wine and cheese parties. Most people have parties in their rooms, but they are fun. There's also a "nightclub" on campus called the Bunker that can be sketchy but really fun. There's a lot of options.

The parties on campus come in two...
The parties on campus come in two kinds: a bunch of people crammed into someone’s room playing cards or standing in line at a social house for a plastic cup of Natty Lite. Language house parties are by far the best! Middlebury has no clubs, and there are only three bars: Mister Ups, Two Brothers Lounge & Stage, and Two Brothers Tavern. Each has its own specials, and you’ll be sure to find everyone you know at the same place every week. |

There are almost always a few good parties on the weekends. The bar scene has improved, too, with the addition of Two Brothers Tavern. |

If you’re into the club scene, Middlebury College might be a problematic choice; there are no clubs here. McCullough Social Space on a Friday or Saturday is the closest we have to a nightclub outside of Burlington.
Bar Prowler
Although there are only three bars in Middlebury, this means that they are, by default, packed with upperclassmen Thursday through Saturday nights.
Organization Parties
One of the most infamous college dance parties to hit the Middlebury Campus is the “McCullough,” featuring mostly drunken underclassmen, sparkly tube tops, and trashy trance music. These are sponsored by the Alianza Latinoamérica Y Caribeña (ALC). The African American Alliance (AAA) also typically throws a couple of dance parties per semester in the McCullough Social Space. Both are free. Men’s sports teams, particularly the soccer, hockey, and lacrosse teams, host some of the rowdiest parties on campus—freshman girls beware.
Bar Listings
Mister Ups is a student favorite—casual dining by day, student and local hangout by night. Mister Ups serves a variety of good, greasy, bar food at reasonable prices. Wednesday is one of the bar’s most bustling nights, as it serves drafts like Labatt Blue and Budweiser for a dollar all day. Other popular drink specials include Otter Creek and Wolaver’s pints on Thursdays, Coronas and unfrozen margaritas on Fridays, and Cider Jacks on Saturdays. Mister Ups 25 Bakery Ln. (802) 388-6724
Two Brothers Tavern is a favorite among locals, students, and visitors alike for its great food, live entertainment and welcoming atmosphere. The family-run tavern features fifteen local micro-brews and imported beers on draught, including Middlebury's Otter Creek and Wolaver's Certified Organic Ales. Two Brothers Tavern 86 Main St. (802) 388-0002
What used to Angela’s Pub has now been transformed into a classier establishment, severely limiting the level of college debauchery that takes place within the small, dimly lit space. Although still offering karaoke on Tuesdays and “college night” on Thursdays, the crowd is much tamer and the bouncers are far stricter. Needless to say, it still remains as one of the three bars in town and offers plenty of local music, weekend-night DJs, and drink specials to keep students happy. What to Do if You're Not 21
Free movie Fridays in Dana Auditorium are a great way to kick off the weekend. Follow that with a private party or a trip to one of the social houses on campus, and you’ve got yourself a classic Middlebury weekend. McCullough parties: frequently held on Friday and Saturday nights in McCullough Social Space, the centerpiece of a “McCullough” is music, dancing, and plenty of opportunities for scandalous grinding. On Friday nights, The Bunker is open to students of all ages, although you must be 21+ to drink.
