What Middlebury lacks in nightlife and the “hustle-and-bustle factor,” it makes up for in off-campus dining. The town of Middlebury boasts nearly every type of cuisine you might crave—except sushi, for which you’ll have to make a trip to Burlington. There’s an Indian restaurant, a Chinese restaurant, a diner, and so on. Mister Ups and Two Brothers Tavern are essentially the only two popular and affordable hangouts in town, making it difficult for anyone who seeks variety on a tight budget. On the other hand, each one’s list of local brews is extensive and quite good. If you’re really looking for some low-class fun, there’s always McDonald’s on Route 7. Middlebury’s no fast food hub, though—it purposefully shies away from the commercialized fast food establishments to preserve its “antique New England charm.” Most of Middlebury’s greatest restaurants are pricey, but for such a small town, it claims some skilled chefs with savvy dishes. For students living on a small stipend, you may find Middlebury lacking in variety. The delis and bakeries are excellent, however, and the eateries that are there do very well. It’s best to eat on campus most of the time and save up for a couple marvelous meals a month at one of Middlebury’s upscale establishments, where you can enjoy local recipes, wine, and tasty steak or seafood.

For being a small town in the middle of nowhere, Middlebury has a good array of restaurant options. The Indian restaurant here is the best I've had—it's even better than in New York.

There aren’t many restaurants in town, but there are a few really good ones. American Flatbread and Tully & Marie’s are great places to go for dinner. |

I am a big fan of the Taste of India. It’s a good place to go to escape the bland monotony of dining hall food. And hey, you can’t go wrong with curry, right? Mister Ups is also a favorite for the students. It has standard dinner food and a friendly atmosphere. If you’re looking for a fancier destination, the Storm Café and the Swift House Inn are great spots. They’re pricey, but it’s alright if mom and dad are picking up the tab. At the Storm Café, I highly recommend the banana cream pie. |

There are some good restaurants, and some are not so good, but it also depends on what you are looking for. The Storm Café is absolutely wonderful. I love eating at that place so much—it is incredible. Compared to that hot spot, none of the others are nearly as good. There are some other nice places I have heard of a few miles out on Route 7, but I’ve never been. |

There are a surprising number of restaurants off campus, ranging from hangouts like Mister Ups to Fire and Ice. But you may only want to go to the latter if your parents are paying. |
