College Prowler Take

Most students are so locked into the Middlebury bubble that they hardly notice housing, let alone an entire community, exists off campus. Even the ones who are aware of life beyond campus limits have to enter a draw to score off-campus housing, and the quota is limited to approximately 60 students per year. Given this, and the fact that on-campus housing options are typically so appealing, students rarely have the desire to leave their dorms. The LaForce and Atwater suites are pristine and look more like polished penthouses than student housing, while numerous on-campus senior houses are highly coveted and quite roomy. Although many students enjoy feeling farther removed from academics by residing more than 10 yards away from their biology lecture hall, most find it more of a hassle than a blessing to commute 20 minutes every time they have to attend class.

Middlebury and the surrounding areas are certainly host to some rather cozy housing options. Furthermore, most are not outrageously overpriced, and admittedly do afford students the chance to escape a frenetic academic lifestyle once classes have let out for the day. The fact remains, however, that it is difficult to obtain off-campus housing, and it is often not worth the sweat and tears when you have to spend precious study and play time driving to class, lectures, organization meetings, on-campus performances, and so on.

You're not allowed to live off...

You're not allowed to live off campus until senior year. There are some convenient locations near campus, but it might not be worth the cost if you are on financial aid. Beyond the small selection close to campus, be sure you have a car by senior year if you want to live off campus.

Almost no one lives off campus,...

Almost no one lives off campus, and those who do number only a few seniors. Most of the places for rent are old houses and a few apartments, and cars are necessary to commute between home and classes. Yet with all the new and varied housing options on campus, there’s no need to leave.

You can only get off-campus...

You can only get off-campus housing senior year, but depending on your classes, it may not be worth it. It isn’t that much cheaper, so that reason doesn’t count. If all your classes are on campus, it isn’t worth living off campus and having to drive in everyday, find parking, and putt around between classes. You might as well have a room to go to.

I’ve always lived on campus, but...

I’ve always lived on campus, but it seems as though living off campus has its pros and cons. Escaping the campus bubble for senior year would be nice, but it would also be difficult to shuttle to and from campus all day long.

You are not allowed to live off...

You are not allowed to live off campus until senior year, and even then you have to go through a lottery to be able to live off campus. It is probably not worth doing this, as most of the dorms are quite nice, and the College has opened more senior housing on campus, which means suites or houses.

The College operates a draw to obtain off-campus housing. Students must find housing on their own if they are drawn. There are 60 slots available each year, and students make their own groups of up to six students in order to enter the lottery process.

Did You Know?

The best way to find off-campus housing is to befriend the students who currently live in coveted apartments and houses. Landlords will be more likely to take on new tenants who are recommended by students currently living there.

Although there’s a lottery process to live off campus, all seniors who want to live off campus never have a problem gaining permission.
