Parking Permits

It’s simple to get a parking permit—the problem is finding a parking spot near your dorm. Make sure you obtain a parking permit for your visitors immediately, or run the risk of being ticketed and towed.

College Prowler Take

While other schools’ departments of public safety are busy fighting crime, the Middlebury department is too busy saving you from parking your car in the wrong lot or in a fire lane. If one message is clear, it’s to be aware of where you turn off your engine, even if it’s only for five minutes. Security constantly scours the campus at all hours looking to pin students with tickets. If you have to park illegally for a few minutes, turn on your hazard lights. That said, at least everyone can always find a spot somewhere, even though the College will try to discourage you from bringing your car. Freshmen have to park the farthest from the center of campus, and though the situation grows mildly better for seniors, it’s still not ideal.

In general, students shouldn’t complain too much about parking—at least everyone is essentially guaranteed a spot. The overriding qualm that students have about parking is that most of the lots seem to be quite a distance from the main dorms where most students live. Juniors and seniors have a wider variety of lots to choose from, some of which are quite close to the main drag of campus. Sophomores can park in the Center for the Arts parking lot, though, which also isn’t too shabby.

Freshmen and sophomores get bad parking about 20 minutes away, which can be a killer in the cold, but when you're a junior and senior, parking is less of an issue. Middlebury is a pretty small place, so anywhere that you park will not be extremely far.

The College gives parking permits to everyone, and there are plenty of spaces. That said, often the spaces are really far away, thus not desirable spots to park in.

Parking is contained to the extremities of campus, so most students end up just walking around campus. Borrowing a friend’s car, if you don’t have your own, is a must for preserving your sanity, for trips (mainly hiking or other outdoor activities), or for shopping expeditions to Burlington, Boston, Montreal, or New York.

Your parking spot will be far, far away from where you are. So far, that it’s usually easier to walk into town than to walk to your car and then drive into town. People will park around campus, but it’s a sure way to rack up parking tickets. The rare exceptions are small houses, which usually have their own lots reserved for their residents.

There’s adequate parking space on campus. As a last resort, you can park way over in the dirt-track lot if you’re a junior or senior, which is frustrating.
