Should I have a car as a freshman next year? How many people have cars/how important is it to have one - esp as a freshman? (I feel like it's important b/c of how isolated Midd is...)

While other schools’ departments of Public Safety are busy fighting crime, the Middlebury department is busy saving you from parking your car in the wrong lot or in a fire lane. If one message is clear, it’s to be aware of where you turn off your engine, even if it’s only for five minutes. Security constantly scours the campus at all hours looking to pin students with tickets. If you have to park illegally for a few minutes, turn on your hazard lights. That being said, at least everyone can always find a spot somewhere, even though the College will try to discourage you from bringing your car. Freshmen have to park the farthest from the center of campus, and though the situation grows mildly better for seniors, it’s still not ideal.
In general, students shouldn’t complain too much about parking—at least everyone is essentially guaranteed a spot. The overriding qualm that students have about parking is that most of the lots seem to be quite a distance from the main dorms where most students live. Juniors and seniors have a wider variety of lots to choose from, some of which are close to the main part of campus.
