Quick Stats

Best Ways to Get Around Town
  • Bicycle—borrow someone’s bike or bring your own.
  • By car—many people have cars on campus, though it is convenient to have your own. If you do not bring a car, make friends with someone who has one.
  • Walking—it’s brisk during the winter, but downtown Middlebury is hardly a half-mile from campus.
Best Ways to Get to the Airport
  • Ask a friend to drive you there.
  • Middlebury Transit (802) 388-3838 or toll free at (800) 388-1002

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Although the lack of public transit is frustrating at times, most students don’t find it a real hindrance. The town of Middlebury is very small, so it is easy to walk to pretty much anywhere in town. Aside from walking, some students choose to use the public shuttle buses, but most end up borrowing a friend's car or renting a Zipcar.

For long-distance transportation, getting a ride home or to the airport with a friend who has a car is your best bet. The shuttle to Burlington, Middlebury Transit, or another local taxi or airport shuttle company are your next-best options. During school breaks, Middlebury College has buses that transport students to and from NYC or Boston. They are pretty convenient but can be a bit pricey. Overall, Middlebury just isn’t a transport-savvy place, but it doesn’t really have to be. Students are used to walking and helping each other out to compensate for the dearth of public transit.

Ehh...

Getting to Burlington (closest city to Midd) requires an hour drive in your car or the public bus. Midd provides a chartered bus for around 100 bucks to NYC and Boston, and the airport goes around 15 bucks. If you have a car and can bring it, you won't regret it, though you probably can skip out on doing it your freshman yr, since parking sucks for first years. On campus, people mostly walk.

Local Transport Good

Buses run into town periodically during the day. At night you can call Midd Rides for a free ride into or back from town. There are break buses to Burlington, New York, and Boston, but otherwise you need a car or a ride from someone to go long distances.

Nowhere to Go.

To be honest, there is very little reason to leave campus. Middlebury is a very small town and is about 45 minutes from the nearest sizable city. Most people leave campus only to buy groceries or occasionally go out to dinner. There is a bus service that runs through Middlebury and several other nearby towns, but students rarely use it. The exception is the shuttle service that runs to Middlebury's Snow Bowl, where students go skiing in the winter. The shuttle picks students up in the center of campus 4-6 times a day. Transportation to the airport, located 45 minutes away, is fairly reasonable. Students use one of two taxi services and at breaks, ride shares with other students make the fare reasonable. Recently, the student government has begun offering a bus to the airport for a reasonable $5. Oh, and don't expect to find cheap flights to Burlington International Airport, unless you're from New York, that is.
