Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

You know it's cold when temperatures drop into the low teens, and everyone can’t stop daydreaming about warmer climates. Winter is the season that students are most familiar with at Middlebury. Although the frequent storms that dump several inches of snow at a time can seem intimidating, students quickly adapt to the frigid weather and learn to layer their clothing. A warm winter coat and sturdy rain or snow boots are a must. Middlebury’s maintenance service is usually quick to clear pathways and roads of snow, ensuring easy mobility around campus and hardly any snow days. The winter months are spent enjoying activities such as skiing and snowboarding, snowshoeing, sledding, and drinking hot chocolate.

Fall is crisp and cool, while spring is mostly rainy; however, warm and sunny weather does exist at Middlebury, mostly from May until early October. On such gorgeous days, students can be seen lying outside on the lawns or at nearby Lake Dunmore soaking in some rays. Fortunately, regardless of the weather, Middlebury’s campus provides beautiful scenery. It is especially breathtaking in the fall when the trees are filled with brilliantly colored leaves, but even in the winter, students admire the glistening, snow-covered landscape. In addition, the sunsets in Middlebury are definitely not a sight to be missed.

Local Bias

I'm a local, so for me a Vermont winter is nothing new. I love the cold, and the skiing and sledding that comes with the winter snow. It's a pretty big adjustment for some folks though, and definitely should be taken into account if you don't like winter, because in Vermont, winter lasts a VERY LONG TIME. However, this makes the nice warm weather even nicer, and in the fall and spring, EVERYONE is always outside, whether it's studying, napping, or frisbeeing. I give it an A, but many of my non-native friends would probably give it closer to a C.

Snow

It snows a lot in Middlebury. It starts getting cold in mid-autumn. It is usually very chilly walking to class in the morning, but by the afternoon in autumn it usually warms up.

Snow, Cold

It snows a lot in Vermont, which is good if you like to ski but it can get old after a few months. The fall is beautiful, the winters get very cold and the weather starts warming up for the last month or so of the spring semester.
