Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Any positive discussion about Millsaps College begins and ends with the most definitive aspect of a college education: the quality of academics. The passionate and skilled professors are always in tune with students, their needs, and their abilities. Students that make it through the core curriculum, in which foci vary from history to lab science to modern culture, discover their callings and come to understand which paths they should pursue. In every department, you will find well-versed professionals on almost every level who are willing to advise students. Many courses, especially in the humanities, center on discussions. The Socratic Method, an extensively discursive tactic, has as firm a root in classrooms as any subject matter, and timidity may sometimes be mistaken for thoughtlessness. On the other hand, professors who have become acquainted with students on a first-name basis will allow a student’s work to stand for itself.

Increasingly, exemplary students are gaining opportunities to express themselves on campus. The sciences and Arts and Letters Division have symposiums every year. Public presentations of honors projects are held every week in the spring. Students who are interested in a future in education may apply to the Ford Fellowship Program, and the successful applicant selected will assist in teaching a class of choice.

Awesome

Millsaps is absolutely awesome. I could not imagine going anywhere else. They have a liberal arts promgram which allows you to have a major or have 4 minors to make a major. Any and every course you could ever imagine is offered and the professor are wonderful. They are always there and willing to help with everything. The workload is managable but they do expect a lot of their students. And registration has always been pretty much hassle free.

The first two years you’ll be...

The first two years you’ll be exposed to a tremendous amount of stuff from across the curriculum. After that, you’d better prepare for an extensive two years in your subject before comprehensive examinations in your final semester. Even if you’ve aced the other courses, they will turn you away if you don’t show proficiency in comps. In math, you have to answer random and difficult questions in longhand mathematics. In English, you have to pretty much have mastered a work of literature from every period in the language’s history. All of that in addition to the pressure.

Except for a few situations, I...

Except for a few situations, I love every teacher that I’ve had here. They never seem aloof or too self-important. For better or worse, they never push their own research on you. They really have gotten me to see the earthiness of the material, and I see my education for what it is: the blueprint for the rest of my life.

Did You Know?

Millsaps, among other facilities, utilizes an earthquake seismograph, the James Observatory, the Helen Moyers Biocultural Reserve, and an archaeological site in Yucatan, Mexico.

The Writing Center on the south side of campus is a facility that students across disciplines can utilize while working on drafts of their papers. Anyone within the College community can bring drafts, ideas, or assignments and talk to peer tutors who are as diverse in their expertise as the subjects they encounter.

During finals week, Millsaps Productions arranges events aimed at offering stress relief to the student body. Midnight breakfast (for which faculty shows up to serve food to students), bowling tournaments, and ice skating are some of the arranged activities that make up students’ few precious moments away from their books during this stressful time.

Found near the Christian Center, the ‘M-Bench’ has become part of campus lore. As legend has it, if a couple kisses on the bench during a full moon, they will spend the rest of their lives together.
