Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Millsaps is a member of the SCAC, which also features rivals Sewanee and Rhodes. As a Division-III school, it is not allowed to give scholarships based on athletic ability, but that does not necessarily mean that the cupboard is empty. A baseball player was once drafted in the tenth round of the MLB draft. A number of players from other sports have received recognition as well. The truth is, though, that the premier sports—baseball, football, and basketball—have done well, but not well enough to overcome student apathy.

The good stories are rooted in the less popular teams. Female teams have an equal amount of success in their brackets, and soccer and cross country give consistently above-average performances. Intramurals are alive and well. Major IM sports are divided into male, female, and coed. It is never difficult to form a team, but it might be hard to find an appropriate league, as there are no distinctions in playing ability. The playing facilities are well-maintained and well-used. All students are given pretty much free reign to use the same exercise units as the athletes. If you are interested in a larger sporting experience, Jackson State and Alcorn State, two major powerhouses in Division II-A located across the street from campus, play in the Jackson Stadium once a year.

Millsaps Athletics: Full of Spirit and Determination

The athletics at Millsaps college are thriving. Most of the campus is involved in one of the many sports. Although most of the teams do not advance very far in terms of championships, the teams themselves are full of spirit. The amount of time and effort they put into their practices and games is phenomenal. Millsaps athletes devote a large amount of time to their sport, while still allotting time for their studies. The athletes are very well-rounded at Millsaps College.

Students will tell you that the Millsaps teams are not very good, or not as good as their high school teams. The sad thing is that there are some fantastic games being played on campus. The volleyball and cross-country teams always finish with strong records, but they are not the emotional favorites, so no one pays any attention.

People are involved in intramurals. I get e-mails all the time with some trash-talking. It’s like streetball with an element of the WWF mixed in. It’s the biggest nerds out trying to validate themselves on the playing field and acting silly in the process. Students strut around like peacocks after victories.

Most Popular Sports

No sport gets great attention, but football has a natural presence on campus. Soccer, baseball, and basketball get varying levels of crowds, but the student awareness is apathetic, for the most part.

Most Overlooked Teams

The women’s volleyball team, despite having impressive records in 2004 and 2005, was without a coach until July of 2005. By far the best team on campus, they have a quarter of the fan base that more naturally popular (and masculine) sports have carried.

School Spirit

The Millsaps campus doesn’t not have an overwhelming amount of school spirit, but people will turn out for rival sports games and brag about their experiences at the school. Many students have a tremendous amount of pride for their Greek house and major. This develops into some friendly ribbing over the utility of an English degree or the excitement of accounting.

Getting Tickets

There’s no need to get tickets to attend a Millsaps sporting event. Except for football, where tickets are dispersed the week in advance, events are open to the public.

Best Place to Take a Walk

It might be ideal for you to design a course for your own distinct interests. A popular route is around the gate which runs around the southwest side, toward the intramural and baseball ?elds. The Activities Center released a campus map detailing the lengths of most major on-campus sidewalks so that students may tailor their jog more easily.

Did You Know?

Since 1990, Millsaps has won 20 SCAC titles and 10 NCAA playoff bids. It has also won the David M. Halbrook Award seven consecutive times and has received 17 of the last 21 given out. The award is given to schools whose dual commitment to academics and athletics is reflected in the high graduation rate of student athletes. (The 2005 graduation rate for student athletes at Millsaps was 96 percent.)

Jim Page, the baseball head coach, has won SCAC Coach of the Year a record six times. After a standout college career as a player at Millsaps, he has a 398–252–1 record and six SCAC titles.
