Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Thanks to the addition of John, Charles, and Suzanna residence halls, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of single rooms for those preferring a space that is all their own—at a larger price tag, of course. Ezelle and Franklin contain mostly single rooms for upperclassman. With these dorms, neither side of campus can be considered purely freshmen and purely upperclassmen. While in the past only a few suites in Sanderson were reserved for upperclassmen on the north side, the revamped dorm scheme has the north side split pretty evenly. Also, students have a higher chance of a nicer dorm after their first year.

The housing selection program gives preference based on GPAs, which has gotten some criticism from students who feels the process threatens confidentiality. On the other hand, the previous raffle method seemed so much more arbitrary. Some administrators also stay in dorms on certain days, making it an uncomfortable situation for some students who may cross the Residence Life Director in their pajamas. One good thing about the laundry, though, is that it’s absolutely free, as is cable. Nevertheless, students often have to cross over to New South to find open machines, so many still choose to bring some laundry when visiting mom and dad.

You won’t gain friends in housing....

You won’t gain friends in housing. Most people are already into a clique by the time they check in to campus their first day. Early in my first semester, I left my door open and played some light emo music, hoping to stimulate conversation or find some like minds, but everyone in the hall closed their doors and made insults as they passed.

Be prepared to deal with red tape....

Be prepared to deal with red tape. My roommate dropped out of my housing selection, and I spent weeks dealing with the bureaucratic ramifications.
