Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

With such a small student body, diversity might seem an afterthought. The students here are generally Caucasian and from the upper-middle class. On the other hand, there are signs that minority groups are becoming better represented. An organization called the Multi-Cultural Association engages the many different cultural backgrounds on campus, staging the Multi-Cultural Festival each fall, which features diverse performances from square dancing to rap music to classical piano. The College newspaper, The Purple and White, also gives a voice to individuals on campus. Even if diversity is lacking, minority groups are nevertheless well-acknowledged. Minority organizations are gaining steam, holding forums for the entire community, and promoting the cultural qualities in a positive way.

One of the reasons that Millsaps is attractive to minority students and those from the working-class backgrounds is because of the school’s financial aid packages. The College generously funds non-traditional students, bridging the economic gaps between varied social statuses. As with many universities, however, costs have risen. If these trends continue, it is believed that campus diversity may decline.

To Each Their Own

Diversity at Millsaps College is ever present each day you walk across the campus. Attending a small liberal arts school, the college attracts students of all racial, economic, political, religious and sexual backgrounds. The college has groups that represent all facets of a diverse student population and has annual festivals and programs that showcase, support, and allow students to explore all the different ethnicities and beliefs of the students that attend our college. Diversity is not shunned, but welcomed among all our students. Our administration encourages us to find, voice, and stand behind our backgrounds and beliefs and provide opportunities to do so.

There are many different races and religions at Millsaps despite it's Methodist title. The religion department is very accepting and interested in learning and teaching about all religions. I feel like almost every type of person can find a place at Millsaps

I’m surprised when I see people...

I’m surprised when I see people reaching across cultural divides to organize, to celebrate, or to work. It’s sad but true. That conception has only been reinforced by my time at Millsaps College.

Facts

Gay Pride

Millsaps is a very open campus in many ways. Because of this, public displays of gay pride are rare. Students generally have a feeling of acceptance and therefore do not harbor the need to prove themselves.

Political Activity

While the majority of professors are liberal in their ideology (as with most of academia), the students are very well balanced. It is difficult to define the typical Millsaps student politically, because the spectrum is so broad. The Millsaps student may be defined as slightly to the left of the median, but this may be simply because the Democrats are more active on and off campus. Still, Republicans are encouraged to voice their opinions and have ample space and time for expression.

Economic Status

Most students at Millsaps are considered “well off” economically. Still, there are others who would be unable to afford Millsaps without the scholarships and federal aid.

Most Common Religions

Millsaps is a Methodist affiliated college. While the majority of students may not be Methodists, Christianity remains the dominant religion. That being said, there are students who are active and enthusiastic about other religions and value sets. For example, the Muslim Student Association maintains a prayer room, which is accessed only by those students and is used as an unofficial on-campus Mosque. Also, Jackson is the home of the International Museum of Muslim Cultures. The Hindu religion has a large presence on campus through efforts by the religious studies department, the Office of Multi-Cultural Affairs, and the Indian Association in Jackson.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Some underrepresented groups who have organizations on campus include Black Student Association, Muslim Student Association, and the Jewish Cultural Organization.
