College Prowler Take

The drug scene is probably the most predictable aspect of Mississippi. The state, the community, and the campus is conservative. Most students have been drinking alcohol since their early high school careers, and it’s easily available on campus at frat parties or from upperclassmen that have already turned 21. Marijuana is, predictably, considered a marginal drug. A majority of students have used it but frown on it somewhat disapprovingly and don’t make a habit of it. Drug users find little resistance on campus from security.

Freshman year is notorious: Midnight fire alarms, destructive behavior, and borderline criminal activity will be a matter of home life for young students. It is probably fair to say that drug use is also heavy. For the most part, though, that use is purged, or at least the users are, by the time you get to the south side. When away from campus, you may be subject to dorm room searches targeting illegal drugs, so if you’re going to use drugs, at least make sure that you’re careful about it.

Freshman overdo it like they overdo everything. By the time you’re in your sophomore year, drinking and drug use is so low-key that it’s almost invisible.

I enjoy the open-mindedness of the student body, even on issues involving drug use. A lot of students did pot in high school and pick that up some in college. It’s close-knit, so people are comfortable with you doing your own thing because there’s respect.

I wouldn’t do drugs because my sorority sisters would kill me. As involved as people are in their academics, there is no time to do that stuff unless you neglect your friends or your schoolwork.

There’s some real use behind the scenes. The majority of students are on the outside, away from what’s going on in their friends’ lives. There are some heroin and some meth users on campus. When the administration gets involved, it’s at a point when the person can no longer be a student, so they’ve already turned a problem into a non-problem by brushing them under the rug.

Millsaps gets a local reputation as being very liberal, and I think that comes from the faculty as much as the students. The professors seem like they might be able to teach the students a lot in the classroom as well as at the keg. The students have really traditional preferences; i.e., beer.
