Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Millsaps gives one the impression of high school more often than not. But that does fade away. The Greek scene is very inclusive, and that can be a nice meeting spot for singles on campus. Guys, by most estimations, are big-brother types, and if you’re looking for a young professional type who is from an upper-middle-class background, you have hit the jackpot. Girls are much like the stereotypes that their sorority pins would inspire in one’s imagination—needy, slightly immature, vaguely superficial. A sociologist might acknowledge that this is a reflection of environment. Some students become so swallowed up by a specific niche very early that they have to delay that crucial college soul-searching. The administration has also developed a tendency toward coddling students.

As far as ‘the goods’ are concerned, it’s assumed that Millsaps College has a very good-looking campus. Two qualities that have a high value on campus are taste and style. Evening wear usually includes three-piece suits, or even tuxedos, afternoon wear might include a dinner jacket, and morning wear rarely is more liberal than an ironed and tasteful pajama suit. Both the guys and girls are equally involved on campus. There are probably more women involved in volunteer organizations, but more males in varsity sports. Student government has a very balanced expression of both genders.

Mix of Looks

Guys are either the typical frat guy (meaning ones with the shorts and polos with visors or khaki pants and button up oxford shirts) or have the look of "I really don't care". Most are really nice, with a southern gentleman charm. There are PLENTY of athletes on campus so there is definite eye candy.

Girls have either the studious look or the trendy/grunge look. Plenty of sorority girls that have to dress up all the time.

In the end, looks don't say much about personality

A good route to go is just joining...

A good route to go is just joining a fraternity or sorority. That way you can meet caboodles of people, find those that have your same interests, and get married before you’re 22. In such a case, you don’t have to worry about the rest of your life, because it’s pretty much taken care of for you.

The guys are really nice and...

The guys are really nice and respectful, but most of them can be too timid. I went through four semesters before a friend of mine asked me out. He was a great friend, but he ended up taking me to eat at Red, Hot, and Blue, which is a barbecue place. Barbecue, as you know, is date suicide. We didn’t end up going out on a second date, and I just hope he didn’t take that as offensively as it might seem.

Social Scene

As dominant as Greek life is on campus, it may be a feast-or-famine situation for many young adults. Mostly, membership guarantees initiation into the life of weekend formals that serve as dates, and other events. This alleviates a lot of pressure, and many relationships begin in the “friend” stage.

Hookups or Relationships?

Relationships are more prevalent on campus. As might be assumed, freshmen usually go through a "hookup" period before settling down.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Whether the “best” way or not, more couples meet at frat parties than at any other event. Frat parties are often very relaxed and offer a nice medium for a first impression. Both guys and girls can find a nice niche in the crowd, with dancing, drinking, and more low-key activities abounding. Occasionally, the houses will hire a live band or host a crawfish boil, which is considered the campus’s most successful aphrodisiac. Second on the list would probably be organizational meetings or events. Over the course of a humanitarian fundraiser or a political protest, the best qualities of an individual and the common interests of two bring together many singles. A very disappointing third would be the classroom. Millsaps students are notoriously unprepared, often daunted by the complex designs of the subject matter, and placed in an uncomfortable spot in relation to their prospective.

Dress Code

Millsaps is extremely preppy. The run-of-the-mill is a collared, well-ironed shirt for men; for women, skirts and appropriate clothes, and once a week, both the frats and sororities have their members dress very well. There is the sense that it is necessary to have a well-maintained surface. It sometimes might be difficult to find a relaxed ensemble among the student body.
