College Prowler Take

Although a few high-profile attacks on students by people unassociated with the College were reported in the past, many students feel as though safety has become one of the most important benefits of life at Millsaps. After the attacks, changes were made to increase security on campus, and it is now exceptionally difficult to enter campus after hours. Security is often viewed by students as a friendly foil. Unless necessary, parties will rarely be broken up. Many issues, including drug use, are solved in-house without the involvement of city police. A recent issue on campus has been identity theft. There have been reports in which students check their accounts only to discover tens of thousands of dollars of debt. Students seem to be unaware of this and tend to trust the administration. Still, there are those who feel that this is either due to a weak security system or individuals who have taken advantage of their responsibility within the Office of Financial Aid and Business Office.

To many students, the campus is safe enough to walk unaccompanied across campus late at night. The dormitories are electronically locked, but many entrances are propped open by student residents. One of the most popular campus pastimes is reading the security reports in The Purple and White, which documents all reported problems as if it were a Hollywood gossip column. These reports focus on the most bizarre of complaints, including one in which a student claimed that his illegal drugs had been stolen. These outlandish complaints highlight just how menial the on-campus security problems are.

It’s gated. Each dorm is electronically locked. Security is easy to contact. The situation is really nice at Millsaps. All you have to do is use good judgment and muggers will find a much easier target on this campus.

If students looked out for themselves, then we wouldn’t need campus police. They prop doors open and are never aware of their surroundings. Constantly, people wander into dorms whose doors are wide open, and it takes hours before anyone points out suspicious people on campus to the appropriate people.

I left a bunch of CDs in the library, and when I returned for them, they were practically thrown at me. I felt like the finder was disappointed that he found my CDs. That’s the lesson: just have quality possessions, and no one at Millsaps will recognize what they’ve found.

Grab the Purple and White and read the security reports. It’s crazy that security spends their time handling that business. Once in a blue moon there’s a blip, but usually every weekend a drunken dispute happens or someone urinates over the Galloway balcony onto some sorority girl. Those are the great burning issues that security engages.

Security is phantom-like. Safety...

Security is phantom-like. Safety isn’t. People really are far more conscious of protecting themselves, rather than circumventing the authority types. Girls go back to their rooms in pairs, and it’s for good reason, because the muggings really were eye-opening when a naive freshman class began an early part of their life.

Did You Know?

In addition to owning several alarm systems across campus, for many years Millsaps has utilized emergency call-boxes. They are one-button, automated units that connect directly to dispatch.

A Jackson Fire Department station is visible from campus. The two largest medical centers in Mississippi can be found within a block of the College as well.
