Fun Local Trivia
  1. If not the birthplace of the blues, Jackson might have the liveliest modern assortment of clubs and jukes that spotlight this unique musical genre. The 930 Blues Café (located a few blocks away from Millsaps), Field's Café, Queen of Hearts, Hamp's Place, and George Street Grocery are just a few of those clubs.
  2. Ironically, Jackson, the capital of one of the poorest states with one of the highest illiteracy rates, is also home to numerous literary greats, such as Eudora Welty (1909–2001) and Richard Wright (1908–1960), as well as modern authors like Richard Ford and Elizabeth Spencer.
  3. Jackson is the home of the International Museum of Muslim Cultures.
  4. Andrew Jackson, the 17th president of the U.S., is the city's namesake. He was married not far from where the city is now located, in Natchez. There is a large bust of him around the corner from the Mississippi Museum of Art.
  5. The Farish Street District, on the outskirts of downtown Jackson, is the second oldest African American community in Mississippi, and is on the national register of landmarks. One tourist attraction within the district is the Hill-Holly Building, a two-story classic revival brick building which served as the civic and social meeting place for the Black and Tan Republican Party, the Masons, and Eastern Star organizations.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Jackson is often considered a burgeoning city. The construction of a convention center was overwhelmingly approved on an election ballot and is scheduled to be completed within a decade. There are also plans to remodel part of downtown with the specific goal of enlivening local tourism. Local musicians, such as King Elementary and The Rockwells, have been gaining attention. Downtown’s Thalia Mara Hall attracts renowned tours, including jazz musician Winton Marsalis and popular musicals, such as The Full Monty and Miss Saigon. The city also offers tremendously diverse cuisine, from Greek to Japanese.

Some think the changes could potentially stimulate the capital are much belated—when the convention center is completed, Jackson will be the last U.S. capital to receive one. Looking just a few miles beyond the Jackson city limits, students will find a host of new restaurants and thriving new business ventures and shopping centers. P. F. Chang’s has made a big splash in Ridgeland, Mississippi’s ever-expanding Renaissance Colony Park Shopping Center. A short trip down Lakeland Drive will lead students to a host of outdoor mall-style shopping centers in the up-and-coming city of Flowood. Despite these developments, for reasons ranging from academic rigors to ineffective public transportation, many Millsaps students become increasingly insulated over their four years, causing the campus to be informally dubbed “the Millsaps Bubble.”

Mid-Sized City

Jackson is an interesting city. It has the feel of both a small and large town. Really good local dining options.

JSU, Belhaven, and Mississippi...

JSU, Belhaven, and Mississippi College are nearby, but there is not much interaction. There is a lot of neat local stuff to do in Jackson and a lot of great local restaurants. It's cool being in the capital city as well. There are some bad neighborhoods near campus, so it's important to stay away from those. The Reservoir is a fun place to relax and hang out.

Jackson is a capital city, but...

Jackson is a capital city, but there isn't much of a nightlife for people under the age of 21. There are some really good restaurants and a very nice mall. There are plenty of movie theaters, parks, and things to do during the day but not much at night. There are a few colleges nearby—MC, Belhaven, UMC Medical Center. Since all the other campuses don't allow any kind of drinking or parties even if you are of age, most of all the people from the other campuses come to Millsaps to party on the weekends.
