Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Until students have spent a few years in Jackson, they usually aren’t eager to go exploring a downtown area that has a reputation for crime. Before this, students dive into the Greek scene, which hosts about three parties a week. Students later venture out into a bar scene that supplies a variety of neat entertainment options, but few bars have a discriminating ‘type’ and welcome, for better or worse, a mixed bag of customers. A few downbeat clubs exist around campus, but their regulars are very irregular.

Any student will have to put forth real effort to find the places in Jackson that suit them, but that’s the fun part. Fake IDs are not thoroughly checked, and law enforcement is exceptionally lax around downtown and campus. George Street, Fenian’s, and Hal and Mal’s are the most popular bars for the Millsaps crowds, with Hal and Mal’s being the first choice for most off-campus celebrations. Within an hour’s drive is the Mississippi Delta, an infamously poor region of the country. The Delta does, however, maintain numerous “juke joints,” alcohol-serving shacks that preserve the blues in an almost prehistoric period. Every year, several students make trips to the Delta to witness some of the skilled musicians of the juke joints and the powerful humanity of the Delta.

Millsaps-Work Hard, Play Hard

During the week, Millsaps students devote countless hours to their schoolwork. So, once the weekend arrives, they are certainly in need of some stress-relieving fun. The fraternities host theme parties mainly at the beginning of the year, and those tend to go on all weekend long. Throughout the year, they will have other small parties. Most houses are usually pretty packed with people. Once you reach your junior year and are 21, most people go to the bars around Jackson.

Give up if you’re under 21 and...

Give up if you’re under 21 and don’t want to break the law. Once in a while, the clubs won’t weed the underagers from the crowd, but it’s not worth dressing up for. The best parties are on campus. Why bother leaving and getting into that whole problem? There’s a great amount of people our own age here, and even though everyone knows each other, I always find out how much I don’t know about them.

Rio Grande

Rio Grande is the place for the self-proclaimed “happiest hour in town.” Its location on the west side of town and its over-30 clientele usually does not appeal strongly to the student crowd.

400 Greymont Ave.

(601) 969-2141

William’s Lounge

William’s is located on the west side as well. A self-professed “dimly-lit water hole,” it is a throwback to the days “when roadhouses and juke joints ruled the social scene” and offers a wide variety of obscure microbrewed ales.

3730 Delta Dr.

(601) 982-5318

Hal and Mal’s

Receiving a distinct ambience from its industrial lighting and graffitied walls, Hal and Mal’s is the most notable of Jackson’s nightlife spots. It claims to have the “best live music in the state,” as well as a brewpub and Southern cuisine. Its walls are adorned with the performers who have taken the stage here. Every Tuesday is pub quiz night.

200 S. Commerce St.

(601) 948-0888

Fenian’s Pub

Fenian’s has a lunch menu, as well as a full-service bar featuring Irish malt whiskeys and stouts. It’s a “cozy” bar, occupying the second floor of an old building on Fortification a few blocks from campus. As patrons enjoy their drinks and live acts take the stage, a model train circles overhead.

901 E. Fortification St.

(601) 948-0055

George Street Grocery

“George Street,” a popular bar and excellent restaurant, was built as a grocery in 1910 and later bought by the McNelis brothers. When a fight between the brothers ended in the murder of one of the them, the Con Manley family purchased it from the incarcerated brother. Finally, in 1973, it was turned into a bar and restaurant. During this period, Joseph A. Mitchell introduced a live music platform upstairs and subsequently invited such greats as BB King and Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown to play here. The top floor of the building has been used variously as a dance studio, the headquarters of Alcoholics Anonymous, and a brothel.

Being under 21 does not mean you cannot enjoy the club scene in Jackson. It just means you will have to enjoy it sober!
