Best Place to Take Your ParentsCollege Prowler Take
Jackson has a tremendous amount of excellent restaurants in a variety of styles. In any case, this helps to encourage a lively dating circuit on campus and provides a change of pace for the Greek-centric lifestyle that most Millsaps students live. Surprisingly, however, students learn to mostly avoid the downtown area, because there are only a few good places to eat there. A car, therefore, is almost essential for reaching good off-campus dining locations. Within a few minutes’ drive, Greek, Japanese, Chinese, and Mexican places are at the fingertips of any hungry student. They are usually affordable, and their menus are easy to order from, so the restaurant scene is ideal for dates. On the other hand, more traditional selections are left in the hands of some fairly uninspired restauranteurs. Few of the pizza or burrito places are above average; though, naturally, they’re cheaper, so a couple of new places will surface every year or two.

There are a lot of good places...
There are a lot of good places with varieties. Nothing is really in walking distance, except for Pizza Shack.

We have fabulous restaurants...
We have fabulous restaurants around the city and right in walking distance of campus. Some of my favorite places within walking distance include Kiefer's and Pizza Shack. Jackson is a rather large city, so there are great restaurants with a range of different prices.

Have your date pick the place....
Have your date pick the place. Some of the places will rub him or her wrong simply because of the menu and setup. If they pick the place, then both parties win. On the other hand, if you take her or him to Keifer’s for her fiftieth time, thinking yourself a real pimp, then you’ll come up snake eyes, if you know what I mean. |

The food trap is High Street. It’s about two hops and a skip away from campus. It’s got a Wendy’s, Whataburger, Waffle House, and Pizza Hut. As overweight as Jacksonians are, and as dead as the nightlife is, it has to be the most popular hotspot in town. People break from their late-night study sessions to eat there, but it’s like The Green Mile: every bite is a lesson in mortality. |

The best date I ever had included...
The best date I ever had included taking a trip to Banner Hall, which I had never heard of in my two years on campus. We ate a nice meal at Broadstreet, then made our way upstairs to Lemuria, which is a great bookstore. Banner Hall is a microcosm of Jackson—real small, real elusive, but extremely rewarding. |
