College Prowler Take

During freshman year, it is typical to hear from many peers that they will be moving out into their own apartments or homes before sophomore year. But by the time they have been living on campus for three semesters, complacency, enjoyment, and the difficulty of securing and maintaining one’s own home creates an insurmountable slope for most undergraduates. The fraternity houses and the dormitories house more than 80 percent of Millsaps students.

Students living off campus are either from the Jackson area and have support systems, if not homes, already in place. After that, maybe 5 percent of students actually rent and maintain places independently. The exceptions are fifth-year students and part-time students who have their fingers in many pies. The school does not have anyone with the position of arranging off-campus housing or aiding students with their off-campus experience. The SBA Senate maintains a place for off-campus students, but few organizations get input from this disassociated part of the student body. Of course, this is frustrating for the students that do not live on campus—there are strong complaints about their aloofness regarding social events.

The closest thing to off-campus housing that Millsaps has is Greek Row. It’s a lot like the sort of house I think I would want to rent in.

The students that live off campus...

The students that live off campus are all staying with their parents. A couple are truly independent. Most everybody else just inhabits the same room that they had when they were in high school. I admire someone who maintains a consistent schedule, but some 10-year plans should really be two-year plans, y’know?

If you don’t find any students from nearby schools or Millsaps, you should try to get your own place, because some of the people I talked with—like 40-hour work-week prospective roommates—didn’t seem very promising.

I have lived off campus since my sophomore year. I looked forward to it, and I think the extra responsibilities gave me some focus. When my comps came around, I aced them, because I had the ideal environment for a student. No roommates, no distractions, no handicaps that might prevent me from getting down to work. My personal life is so much better too, because everybody that dates at Millsaps seems to be committing incest.

My parents wouldn’t spring for the extra cash for me to live off campus. Only 65 percent of your aid remains if you don’t use dorms. Still, you have bills and food expenses. One girl that I dated for a while had to work 40 hours, her car insurance lapsed, and people look puzzled if I mention her name.
