Half and Half

The Greek population at Millsaps College makes up about fifty percent of the students. There are four sororities and five fraternities. The reason that so much of our student population is greek is because the process of rush is simply not as intense as it is at other schools. Plenty of greeks and non greek students are friends and go to the parties. The fraternities generally have parties every weekend, while the sororities have two to three parties a year. Swaps are parties held between the sororities and fraternities and are exclusive to members of the two houses having the swap. The guys can live in the fraternity houses but the girls cannot live in the sorority houses. Overall at Millsaps, the consensus about Greek life is to try first get involved and "go greek" and then to find your perfect fit, and the best thing is that at Millsaps, everyone has a perfect fit.

Mix of Looks

Guys are either the typical frat guy (meaning ones with the shorts and polos with visors or khaki pants and button up oxford shirts) or have the look of "I really don't care". Most are really nice, with a southern gentleman charm. There are PLENTY of athletes on campus so there is definite eye candy.

Girls have either the studious look or the trendy/grunge look. Plenty of sorority girls that have to dress up all the time.

In the end, looks don't say much about personality

Awesome

Millsaps is absolutely awesome. I could not imagine going anywhere else. They have a liberal arts promgram which allows you to have a major or have 4 minors to make a major. Any and every course you could ever imagine is offered and the professor are wonderful. They are always there and willing to help with everything. The workload is managable but they do expect a lot of their students. And registration has always been pretty much hassle free.

There are a lot of good places...

There are a lot of good places with varieties. Nothing is really in walking distance, except for Pizza Shack.

Freshmen can bring cars, but it is...

Freshmen can bring cars, but it is not a problem if they do not have one. Parking is a little bit crowded, but it is not unbearable.

We have fabulous restaurants...

We have fabulous restaurants around the city and right in walking distance of campus. Some of my favorite places within walking distance include Kiefer's and Pizza Shack. Jackson is a rather large city, so there are great restaurants with a range of different prices.

JSU, Belhaven, and Mississippi...

JSU, Belhaven, and Mississippi College are nearby, but there is not much interaction. There is a lot of neat local stuff to do in Jackson and a lot of great local restaurants. It's cool being in the capital city as well. There are some bad neighborhoods near campus, so it's important to stay away from those. The Reservoir is a fun place to relax and hang out.

Jackson is a capital city, but there isn't much of a nightlife for people under the age of 21. There are some really good restaurants and a very nice mall. There are plenty of movie theaters, parks, and things to do during the day but not much at night. There are a few colleges nearby—MC, Belhaven, UMC Medical Center. Since all the other campuses don't allow any kind of drinking or parties even if you are of age, most of all the people from the other campuses come to Millsaps to party on the weekends.

I compiled a list of pros and cons after two years at Millsaps, and even though I enjoyed it, the cons far outweighed the pros. The school is no good for the pre-med crowd.

These are your two options if you...

These are your two options if you come to Millsaps: either you join a frat, under-achieve, and spread the dirt on everyone, or you invest yourself in the intense course load, attempt to balance that with some other activities, and have dirt about you spread around campus. You probably won’t find any like minds, but you’ll find plenty of people that have deep pockets interested in buying a degree. The administration is very underhanded as well; they jack tuition up every year and have stopped giving excuses.

Every high school student gets...

Every high school student gets told that they’ll be thrown to the lions. A million papers that some professor is going to blow through on his way to a downtown bar. I was intimidated beforehand, but when I got into my second semester, I realized I had great, smart, and generous professors, and that I wouldn’t be steamrolled. That, and I found out that becoming a CPA wasn’t for me, and that there were a lot of opportunities after college for someone with an English degree, which is like Christmas coming early almost every day.

Millsaps is probably one of the most overlooked colleges in this country. But it’s a lot like a good movie: sometimes you have to do a little research to find a classic, but then you’re in that small group that has that great experience, and everyone else is puzzled whenever you talk about it in front of them.

The campus is beautiful, the people are fantastic, and I met the love of my life here. I don’t know that anyone imagined me coming here, but now I couldn’t imagine going anywhere else.

Millsaps has helped me come closer...

Millsaps has helped me come closer to achieving the things that I have always aspired to doing. The student-to-teacher ratio is one of the best, because it really enables an actual relationship. I have professors that are mentors, valuable guides, and genuine friends.

Expectations at Millsaps can be...

Expectations at Millsaps can be really high. I don’t think students on the outside look at the experience we’re having as being as intense and crazy-fun as it is.

The weather isn’t crazy or...

The weather isn’t crazy or anything, but the school makes it worse. The classrooms are stuffy, and the dorm rooms are freezing. I have left my dorm room in winter clothes and then had to go back and change because it’s piping hot outside.

I got moved to the opposite side...

I got moved to the opposite side of campus for being rowdy. A few friends of mine got into a little argument with an RA, a few pranks ensued, and without any evidence, they reprimanded us. The worst part is they went into our e-mails without my permission to gather information. And one of their witnesses was very clearly lying as well.

I have always felt heat in...

I have always felt heat in representing my frat. It seems that there are always two or three people in the room ready to rat you out for smoking with your pin on or some other archaic offense like that.

There is no flexibility in campus...

There is no flexibility in campus dining. You have a set number of choices (just imagine the McDonald’s menu). Sometimes, they have local restaurants give samples, but desperate students have engulfed all the samples by the time you have glanced at them. The school is small, but as it is so clique-ish, most students make sure they meet someone there.

Typical of Millsaps campus, I heard all of this negative stuff about the AC and the south side of campus, and how the admissions department for a long time hid the latter from prospective students. When I discovered I had already seen both and had not gotten a bad impression from either, it did leave the impression that the students here have super-intense criticisms of everything.

There is no better feeling than...

There is no better feeling than being in a frat on Saturday night, because everybody’s trying to get in to be a part of the only party on campus. We’re always inclusive. No frats lock you out because of your association. But there is some friendly grief. Alcohol is always available, and sometimes a frat will set up an open bar for guests. The drinks are of mixed quality, with the Chops (the Lambda Chi Alpha frat) always having the best setup and amateur bartenders.

The professors in my department...

The professors in my department got feedback from some graduated students that they had not been doing so well. It was largely because the material in graduate school was completely different than what they were teaching at Millsaps. The department came together and decided that, in the interest of the students, they should make some changes. It has been like that the entire time I have been here. The administration, the faculty, and other students have always been willing to lend an ear to any trouble that I have had.

There are more drawbacks than...

There are more drawbacks than advantages to coming to Millsaps. The price is ridiculous and is only going up. The professors are very firmly liberal and not always open to discussion. I got as much out of high school, which was absolutely free. I’m just not sure 10 years of debt is worth it.

It’s like military service for...

It’s like military service for some students. They believe they have to do it to make it socially. And if you want to be involved in a particular part of campus life, then you have to choose the appropriate frat: the SAEs are very young lawmakers of America trying to get laid today, the Lambdas are smart, quirky, and throw the best parties, the Pikes are new and very diverse, and the KAs have managed to piss everybody off.

A good route to go is just joining...

A good route to go is just joining a fraternity or sorority. That way you can meet caboodles of people, find those that have your same interests, and get married before you’re 22. In such a case, you don’t have to worry about the rest of your life, because it’s pretty much taken care of for you.
