Due to the diverse student population on campus, it is hard to spot someone out of place, so Campus Security, try as it might, does not do as well of a job as other schools. While Security has many services, such as emergency blue lights and an escort service, there have been complaints that its phones are always busy. Most security officers are work-study students who are majoring in law enforcement, and if there is something seriously wrong, you can count on them. Security also responds fairly quickly when someone pushes the button at an emergency blue light. There have been sexual and physical assaults on campus, but the perpetrators are generally caught quickly, and the school is very good about letting students know about these kind of issues.

Security in the dorms is extremely good. In the newer dorm buildings, such as Julia Sears, Crawford, and McElroy, the side doors are card-access only and the front doors lock at 11 p.m., so students need a MavCard to enter their dorm and floor. In older dorm buildings, such as Gage Towers, students use their room keys to get into the building.
