Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The MSU student body is a very athletic group overall. They love to hike, run, bike, climb, and ski. When it comes to varsity sports, however, the student support is usually lacking, unless the University of Montana Grizzlies are in town for a game—then all hell breaks loose, and everyone is given a sudden injection of adrenaline-packed school spirit. This becomes obvious the night before Cat/Griz football tickets go on sale, when a long line of students are camped out in the cold in front of the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse waiting for the box office to open at 10 a.m.

MSU is unique in some respects, as it has a nordic ski team, something offered at few schools across the nation. Other than this, students wanting to play varsity are stuck with the traditional sports. Varsity teams play Idaho State University, U of M, Eastern Washington, Portland State, Weber State, and other athletically mediocre schools from the western United States. In other words, don’t plan on seeing the Bobcats play on national television anytime soon. Intramural and club sports are quite popular here (approximately 75 percent of the students participate), and cover a much wider variety than the varsity sports. Lacrosse, ultimate Frisbee, cribbage (somehow they get away with calling this a sport), and racquetball are popular intramurals and clubs, as well as the more common sports including tennis and soccer.

School Spirit

The school spirit at MSU is outstanding. The students, faculty, alumni, and the community are very supportive of not only the athletes but the school as well. This year was a great year to be a freshman experiencing "college level football" at MSU.

Bobcats Are CHAMPS!

I love how the entire community can pull together to support our CATS! We just added an endzone seating section at the football stadium and it's amazing to see the stands fill up with cheering fans.

School Spirit

While the Bobcats may not always be a winning team, students, faculty, and fans seem to forget that whenever the University of Montana Grizzlies are in town. The whole town focuses on the game, and it rarely disappoints. Homecoming is also a major event, complete with royalty and a parade which draws quite the crowd. Everyone likes to get involved and deck themselves out in blue and gold to cheer on the ‘Cats.

Getting Tickets

Tickets can usually be found the day of the game, unless it is Homecoming or a Cat/Griz game. The AskUs desk and the Fieldhouse are your two best bets for getting your ticket, but don’t forget your OneCard—that will get you a ticket for free.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Bozeman is full of hiking trails, and the best ones that are still close to campus are in Hyalite Canyon, about a 15-minute drive away. For those looking for a leisurely stroll, the historic neighborhoods around campus offer beautiful homes to look at and a fairly flat surface.
