Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The Greek scene at MSU is less than prominent, with only nine fraternities and four sororities. Most students view the Greek life as an extension of high school cliques and avoid it at all costs. Those who do venture into it, however, find a great group of people for parties and consuming massive amounts of alcohol. A few years ago, the frats and sororities only raised $9,000 between the 13 of them, leading the casual observer to come to the conclusion that their main goal is actually not benefiting the community, but (gasp!) throwing loud parties that the cops often have to break up.

Despite the downfalls (or, if you prefer the keg to helping UNICEF, the benefits) of joining a Greek organization, the experience does give members some vital networking skills. The ASMSU president is a member of a frat and is, of course, very well-known among all groups of people. In this sense, Greek life is very prominent on campus, since in most cases, Greek students are the ones representing the rest of the students. They also organize some entertainment events, such as recruiting comedians to come to MSU. So, while fraternity brothers and sorority sisters do not always do much to help the community, they do set themselves up for success—something to keep in mind during fall Rush.

Greek Isn't Too Important

I am a member of the football team but not a part of Greek Life. However I do know that most of my friends would prefer not to hang out around the fraternities as they are seen as "uncool" or "stupid". This is only what the people I have come into contact think at the moment though. I remember at the beginning of the year the frats were the place to be because no one knew of anywhere else to hangout on the weekends. I'd say Greek Life probably receives a C+ for the first semester of Freshman year, but only a D+ for second semester and I only imagine this going down over the years.

Greeks Are Very Active

Greeks have a big role within our campus, most do not cause trouble with the campus or police. No violence, of course there all several different ones to fit all your needs and personal experiences.
