College Prowler Take
The Greek scene at MSU is less than prominent, with only nine fraternities and four sororities. Most students view the Greek life as an extension of high school cliques and avoid it at all costs. Those who do venture into it, however, find a great group of people for parties and consuming massive amounts of alcohol. A few years ago, the frats and sororities only raised $9,000 between the 13 of them, leading the casual observer to come to the conclusion that their main goal is actually not benefiting the community, but (gasp!) throwing loud parties that the cops often have to break up.
Despite the downfalls (or, if you prefer the keg to helping UNICEF, the benefits) of joining a Greek organization, the experience does give members some vital networking skills.
The ASMSU president is a member of a frat and is, of course,
very well-known among all groups of people. In this sense,
Greek life is very prominent on campus, since in most cases, Greek students are the ones representing the rest of the students. They also organize some entertainment events, such as recruiting comedians to come to MSU. So, while fraternity brothers and sorority sisters do not always do much to help the community, they do set themselves up for success—something to keep in mind during fall Rush.

The Greeks may be less active here than at other schools, but they are still involved. They put on activities across campus, and it is a good way for students to get involved. |

The Greek life here is not very big compared to other schools across the nation, but we definitely have it, and it is a presence on campus. |

Living in a neighborhood full of sororities and fraternities, I have seen the side most students don’t: the singing, cheering, constantly loud side. |

I considered joining a fraternity for a while before I got to school at MSU. Then I realized that no one pays much attention to the Greeks, and if they do, it’s only because there is a party going on at one of the houses (usually the Pike house) and not because they’re doing something really great for the school. |

The Greeks definitely do not dominate the social scene. I’ve been here three years and still haven’t set foot in the campus’s biggest party fraternity, the Pike house. |
