Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Academics at MSU are centered around the sciences and engineering, so there are more opportunities for people in these majors. If you are in the humanities, though, the professors are still excellent, and you will get your money’s worth.
  • Buy a five-day meal plan, unless you really like greasy food.
  • It’s not always necessary to attend every single one of your classes all the time, especially when they are 100-levels.
  • People aren’t lying when they say it gets cold here.
  • Try to talk your parents into putting more than the standard $100 on your OneCard.
Tips to Succeed
  • Act enthusiastic around the professor, even if you’re not.
  • Become familiar with WebCT, and check it often.
  • Don’t fall behind in classes.
  • Don’t stress out about picking a major until you’re sure you know what you want.
  • Participate in class discussions.
  • Talk with your professors, especially those in your major.

Relaxed and Fun

Everyone at Bozeman is down for a good time. Whether its skiing at Bridger Bowl only 20 minutes away, or hanging out with friends on and off campus, everyone has the same chill and laid back attitude that is easy to work in. Everyone is friendly and the town is very supportive of their local Bobcats.

Inside MSU

The community here is incredible. The academic programs are tough but very good. There is always something going on and you make friends with some of the most interesting people.

Facts

Traditions
  • Cat/Griz Football: When it’s an MSU vs. University of Montana home game, students pack up their tents, sleeping bags, and (though they’re not supposed to) a bottle of alcohol. Then they trek over to the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse and camp out for tickets. The best part of this tradition is the following morning when the rest of campus lines up to get tickets and gets the opportunity to watch the campers awaken from their drunken stupors.
  • The Duck Pond: On the west side of campus, there is a pond full of ducks. Students grab bagels from dining halls or old, stale bread and spoil the ducks with treats. Since the pond is a hot spring, they stick around all year. During spring finals, some students like to take a study break and watch all the little ducklings waddle around.
  • Hello Walk: Years ago, the Centennial Mall was an actual street, and everyone walking down it would have to say hello to everyone they saw, whether they knew them or not. The Mall is now for pedestrians only, but students still like to give a smile and wave to one another.
  • Hike to the ‘M’: Freshmen and a few other students gather together with their residence floors at the beginning of the fall semester and go on a big group hike up to the MSU ‘M’ on the Bridgers.
  • Jim Bridger Days: Montana loves its mountain men, and Jim Bridger is one of the most popular of the old trappers. Each year in his memory, MSU students gather together in the Jim Bridger Days competition. Events in the past have included wolfing down Jell-O, running in circles with your head stuck to a baseball bat, and a root beer chugging contest.
  • Midnight Mania: The night before Homecoming, the Fieldhouse is converted to a college student game land with a climbing wall, boxing ring with giant gloves, sumo wrestling, and music.
  • Robert Redford Films: The infamous actor and director, Robert Redford really seems to love MSU. He filmed the bar scenes in A River Runs Through It in the SUB’s Leigh Lounge and the hospital scene from The Horse Whisperer in Hannon Hall.
  • Shakespeare in the Parks: This traveling group of actors puts on shows during the Sweet Pea Festival in the summer and off and on for students and residents of Bozeman during the warmer months. They usually choose two Shakespeare plays, one that is well-known and one that is more obscure.
  • Skiing: The majority of students at MSU arrange their schedules not only according to classes they have to take, but also to leave “ski days” open.
  • Tailgating: MSU Bobcat football fans love to do a little pre-gaming before the home games. People come from all over the state with their cars and trucks to set up grills and open up coolers of beer.
Urban Legends
  • A few decades ago, some guys managed to get a cow to the bell tower of Montana Hall. To get the cow down, the school had to remove the top of the tower. Now the bell sounds are recorded.
  • Hapner Hall was built over an old Bozeman brothel.
  • Heated tunnels are underneath most of campus.
  • The third floor of Hamilton Hall is supposedly so haunted that workers in the building refuse to go up there.
