Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There is always something going on around town, whether it is a concert, a theme party (‘80s theme parties run rampant here), or a midnight hike up to the “M.” The bars are a great place to scope out attractive Bozemanites and MSU students, and clubs such as The Zebra offer great musical entertainment most of the time. Do not expect the Bozeman party and club scene to be on the same level as a big city, though.

Montanans love to drink, and Bozeman boasts bars for all types of barhoppers. For the poor college student just looking for some alcohol and a pool table, a bar such as The American Legion is a safe bet. Any student who just got a fat paycheck may feel like splurging, in which case Plonk is a good choice. For those under 21 who want to try out the bar scene, make sure that fake ID is a good one; bars card here, for the most part, and won’t accept a cheap Xerox of your older brother’s license. Anyone trying to avoid alcohol can find solace in coffeeshops around town where some decent musicians play. Spend a couple bucks on a hot chocolate, and you can have free entertainment for hours. The Zebra, an 18-and-over club, is a great place to hear some of Bozeman’s top bands and even some nationally-known groups. MSU tries to provide alcohol-free ways to have fun, including some good comedians. Climbing up to the “M” on the Bridgers offers a spectacular view of the city at night and is popular, especially with freshmen.

It's Montana

Downtown Bozeman has some bars but only for 21 year olds, there aren't very many options for the younger college students.

Age

The difference is the age, less then 21 and there's not much to do, older and the whole town is open for business. For those under, there is a few restaurants that will stay open all night, but not much past that.

Above the Influence

So I am an 18 year old nerd whose dorm is dubbed 'the nunnery' because we don't go out and party. So I really don't know. All I know is that my friends and I enjoy running around Bozeman and going to the bookstore reading Dr. Suess aloud until it closes or late night runs to fast food. But parties with booze and drugs are really not my forte.

The Robin Bar & Lounge/The Baxter

The Baxter was built in 1929 by a man who realized the need for Bozeman to have a downtown centerpiece where the community could come together. The building is now under new ownership, and the owners are trying to reestablish the old, antique feel of The Baxter. The Baxter will be a premier dining establishment, a fun bar with great live music, and a place to go to get a feel for old Bozeman.

Mixer Club

Formerly known as Little John’s Bar, Mixers has been undergoing some major changes since it was created a year ago. Its nonsmoking atmosphere makes it popular with everyone, but the majority of regulars are students who love to listen to the live request DJ on Wednesday through Friday.

With its quiet, tranquil atmosphere, Korner Club bar and restaurant has continually added to its already lengthy list of regulars.

Rocking R. Bar

The R is a sports bar that has a small Pickle Barrel sandwich shop inside it. This gives it an interesting atmosphere during the day when it’s full of families grabbing lunch and people drinking beer and yelling at the big screen TVs. One of the nicer bars in Bozeman, it offers imported beer, mixed drinks, and occasionally some live music at night.

Plonk

Plonk is so great, it doesn’t have to offer specials. Attracting an artsy group, the bar is Bozeman’s high-class hideaway. The feel is that of a Manhattan bar until you look out the window and see sky instead of tall buildings.

Boodles

This fine-dining establishment goes from high-class meals to a wild party, all within a few hours. During the day, Boodles is the place for Bozemanites to catch a delicious lunch, but after the food is served for the day, college students invade it, transforming its atmosphere into that of a fun, popular place to get a drink. It also boasts the best handcrafted cocktails in town.

American Legion Club

The Legion has DJs on the weekends, a perk lots of college kids like to take advantage of. This usually leads to a lot of drunken dancing.

KO’s Club

KO’s caters to college students looking to have a good time on the dance floor. There is usually a live DJ there keeping everyone on the hip-hop dance floor. The recent addition of two poker tables draws in a mixture of students and Bozeman residents.

The Crystal Bar

The Crystal Bar is always full with MSU people, whether they are students, staff, or alumni. Unlike most of the other older bars, it hasn’t been remodeled in over 20 years, so it still has a familiar atmosphere for returning alumni. It’s also the best place in town to have some whiskey and steak while observing the ever-growing bra collection from women who like to get onstage and add their lingerie to the conglomeration.

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

Check out the local bands playing at any of the coffeeshops around town, especially The Leaf & Bean. For a wilder night, head over to The Zebra, or go to one of The Baxter’s 18-and-over dances.
