Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There are two things MSU students agree about when discussing off-campus housing: there are plenty of good houses and apartments to choose from, but you should be ready to pay for them. Some students, mainly those from the Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho areas, balk at the cost, but those from California and Colorado grin in relief. In addition to the cheap or arm-and-leg rent, whatever your perspective, the extra cost of utilities can add up quickly during the cold Montana winters. Despite the somewhat high cost of living off campus, it is still comparable to living in the dorms, making it worth the move for most upperclassmen. The absence of alcohol policies also lures students off campus, along with not having to put up with the food served in the dining halls.

As many in-state and out-of-state spectators start to invest in Bozeman property, finding a place to rent is becoming more and more easy. Some brave students wait until mid-August, just a week or two before school starts, to really start looking. This is not advised. It is possible to find somewhere to live at this time, but all the good deals are normally snatched up around July. One place many students flock to is the “Birdhouses” (officially named the University Village Apartments). These apartments are full of MSU students and are practically on campus, making them an easy transition from the dorms to a real house.

Lots of Options

There are quite a few options for living off campus at MSU. My roommate and I found an apartment that is a twenty minute walk from campus and about 5 minutes from downtown. The nicer houses and apartments that are near campus are a little bit more pricey but there are also many options that are very nice for much cheaper if you are okay with living a ways away.
