College Prowler Take

There are two things MSU students agree about when discussing off-campus housing: there are plenty of good houses and apartments to choose from, but you should be ready to pay for them. Some students, mainly those from the Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho areas, balk at the cost, but those from California and Colorado grin in relief. In addition to the cheap or arm-and-leg rent, whatever your perspective, the extra cost of utilities can add up quickly during the cold Montana winters. Despite the somewhat high cost of living off campus, it is still comparable to living in the dorms, making it worth the move for most upperclassmen. The absence of alcohol policies also lures students off campus, along with not having to put up with the food served in the dining halls.

As many in-state and out-of-state spectators start to invest in Bozeman property, finding a place to rent is becoming more and more easy. Some brave students wait until mid-August, just a week or two before school starts, to really start looking. This is not advised. It is possible to find somewhere to live at this time, but all the good deals are normally snatched up around July. One place many students flock to is the “Birdhouses” (officially named the University Village Apartments). These apartments are full of MSU students and are practically on campus, making them an easy transition from the dorms to a real house.

Off Campus

A

I like living off campus, it is easy to get around town, there are stores and restraunts nearby. Lots of room for parking and I feel very safe in this neighborhood

Bozeman has to be about the easiest place ever to find an apartment. I waited until the middle of August one year, and I was still able to find an okay deal.

I definitely think that moving off campus is worth it after freshman year, but then again, I need my space. I think it is easy to find a good place, and Bozeman has a better housing situation than a lot of places, for sure.

Here are the three best things about off-campus housing: it’s easy to find, you can walk around carrying a bottle of alcohol and no one will care, and you have a lot more space. On the not-so-good side, you have to live off of Ramen or learn how to cook, you have to make that final transition to becoming a mature adult, and the housing can get a little expensive if you want to be within walking distance.

I’m a sophomore, and I’m still living on campus. That may make me a giant loser in some people’s books, but I would hate to leave the dorms at this point in my college career. It’s also a smart move to stay on campus for another year, because you can just go over to your friends’ houses and hang out there if you have the need to get off campus. It’s the best of both worlds!
