The drug scene at Montserrat is not big at all. Students are very close and try to find other fun activities.

Parking is difficult because of a lack of a proper school parking lot for students. There is a small parking lot around the school but there's only three visitor spots and the rest are reserved for staff. Students have to park on the street or in a public lot a few streets down, which can make things difficult for commuters or students who have to drive back and forth to and from work.

I love the options and variety of classes at my school. It's flexible, so that just because you're a certain major doesn't mean you can't take the classes for other majors. The teachers are all on a first name basis and for the most part very approachable and hard-working. They truly do want to see you succeed.

We don't have a caf or meal plan. All food is responsibility of the students. This can be both extremely liberating but also tough on students who can't go grocery shopping or lack money for food. Thankfully a small food drive happens for students who can't afford that, and school events often have free food.

They're very lenient on drug and alcohol use on campus, which is very important considering not every student is comfortable with those activities. Disruptive campus life can be extremely distracting. But it's very easy to go off campus to partake in those activities, and the guards and police are aware of that. You won't get punished for it if you aren't causing a disruption outside in town and are off campus. They really work hard to make sure townies aren't causing problems as well.

The crew in charge of facility care work around the clock to make sure things are as clean and as taken care of as possible, and it really does show. There's a designated space for every major but the facilities are open to all majors in case a project crosses over into another space, which is very freeing. There is a lack of space sometimes though, it feels like. And a lack of 24 hour access can be very limiting when students feel they are under a crunch time or just want to get things done. But nothing major in my opinion.

They really make a wonderful effort to get people involved in a variety of activities and clubs. Not to mention they give the students a lot of control over whether or not they want to attend things or start their own clubs and groups. There's a very good amount of freedom there. Things that could be better are how fast the students can start it up. Sometimes they may have to visit the head of those things several times before someone is there to talk to or email several times before somebody responds. But all in all it's a chill environment and there's always plenty going on.

there are no f***ing sports. stop asking if there are.

I think besides having excellent teachers, the small class sizes are integral to getting direct and immediate feedback on our artwork in the studio classes. The social scene is limited and Beverly may be too small a town for some students as there is a limited amount of things going on in town. Boston is a train ride away. Montserrat insists that all students do an internship. Many art schools do not feel this is necessary. I think that the internship process allows the student to see a business perspective associated with the artistic process and it allows the student to be fully involved in learning from someone who is already pursuing the goal we wish to follow.

I am in my freshman year so it is difficult to be too specic about a major. I am looking forward to taking classes geared toward my major next year. The foundation classes are rigorous and challenging. The professors are accessable and offer great critiques and advice. Internships start next year and the options are limitless depending on ones interests.

Because I am enrolled in an art school the portfollio is especially important. I attended a 3 week summer workshop at Montserrat which introduced me to the challenges of college, the benefits of small class sizes and some of the teachers. I managed to get a small scholarship because of work during that time.

The campus is compact and it is easy to walk from one area to another. My dorm is made up of 3 bedrooms with 2 students per room, a common kitchen area and living space, 2 toilets and two shower stalls. It's a lot of girls in one space and often too noisy. We are able to use the local YWCA which is grimy but usable. There are a number of galleries in town and a few run by Montserrat which feature both student work and visiting artists. The town of Beverely has many restaurants and coffee shops. Best of all is the access to a small beach during the nicer weather. It is a walkable town and relatively safe. There are clubs to join but they are not as active as one might hope. The library is a great resource and the librarian is helpful. The town library is right across the street and open to us also. There are a number of open green spaces next door which are great for relaxing and for doing homework in when the weather allows.

The foundation year at Montserrat is challenging. I look forward to being able to explore the painting and sculpture classes beyond freshman year. I believe in my artistic abilities and find that Montserrat has helped me grow my skills.
Yes,I would do it again. My goal is to pursue a dual degree in sculpture and painting and work as an artist upon graduation or to go into a masters program.
I worry about the cost of my education but I think it is invaluable. I realize I may need to take on additional work to pay loans but I will do what it takes to follow this dream.

I have not had an internship yet. Montserrat helps to pair students with an artist, gallery, business in their sophomore year. These internships are unpaid but good connections for students once we graduate.

if your over 21 you have more choices for bar scenes, yet it still shys away from real nightlife. the ever so often off campus party happens if you know someone. going to boston is little of an option because the train stops at midnight. the school is really strict and will punish you with partying and what you do and have in the dorms. welcome to a somewhat dry life
College Senior 2013-03-20T17:12:49Z
there are a few options, it has become competitive and the price for the financial service shys away from becoming affordable unless your one of the lucky few. yet there are quite a few options!

a small city, there really isnt much to do, there are some attractions but without a car your sorta stuck. shopping becomes local thrift stores, needs more shops and events with the community. not too much scenery but a trip to the beach and hanging out, and some few good eats with friends is probably the most youll get out of it
College Senior 2013-03-20T17:06:18Z
racially we have some diversity, but the students are more diverse in personality more than anything since we are an art school, we get along pretty well
College Senior 2013-03-20T17:04:17Z
its new england so it snows alot and can get really cold in the winter, we have to have classes cancelled alot sometimes which has its pros and cons since we have to squeeze our time to use facilities. fall spring and summer is beautiful, a trip to the beach is 2 blocks away and everyone hangs outside on the common.

The computers on campus are constantly kept up to date and are equipped with any software you might need to complete an assignment. There is usually room available to work. I would recommend bringing a personal computer, but depending on your major, it i not completely necessary. The wifi is reliable for the most part.

As a photo major you get exposed to a lot of different techniques including darkroom work and film making. Unfortunately the same teacher teaches all of the upper level photo class so the format of them can become a bit repetitive.

The school has no sports teams, but enrollment in the school includes a free membership to the local YMCA.

Because we're right on the ocean the weather is very mild. It rains more often than not.

There is no school meal plan or dining hall available. However the school I right downtown and there are a lot of good restaurants close by. Unfortunately they can be expensive.
Sorry, there are no reviews.
