Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Let’s just say Mount Holyoke isn’t a sports-oriented campus. There are students who faithfully participate in a sport all four years, but those who don’t probably won’t even come out to watch the games. It’s not that you can’t find sports if you’re looking for them, but the latest basketball statistics probably won’t be a hot topic of conversation around the dinner table (unless one of your friends is on the basketball team). That said, the facilities are there for some sports to really shine. Kendall is well equipped, and the Equestrian Center is a reason some students come here—not every campus has a barn and extensive indoor and outdoor riding areas, nor a famous golf course.

From the proliferation of club sports, it would seem that Mount Holyoke women play sports more for the fun of it than for the competition. Not that club sports and the few intramurals that are offered need to be any less strenuous than intercollegiate sports, but they offer a chance to participate without as much external pressure to perform. Club sports differ widely in the level of commitment involved—since they are run through Student Programs, they are largely what the students who participate make of them. They are a good way to get involved in something new and exciting, such as cheerleading, water polo, or hiking, while getting physically fit at the same time. Unfortunately, club sports don’t always get the funding they need, since the student government, which provides the funding to all clubs, rarely has enough money to give every club what it asks for.

Students Are Not Crazy About Sports

Unfortunately, varsity athletes often do not get the credit they deserve and games are not well-attended. Our athletics teams are average at best. The Equestrian team is competitive. Oddly for a women's college there is no softball team. Lacrosse, field hockey and crew are popular as is the rugby team (club sport). There are no intramural sports and limited offerings for club sports. Overall we have an ok program for women's athletics, but if you're looking for a more competitive athletics scene and one where students show up to the games, I suggest looking elsewhere.

Decent

For being a Division III school there are some very strong programs on campus. However there are some other programs that definitely have room for improvement in terms of how challenging they can be.

School Spirit

Mount Holyoke students have plenty of school spirit. Most of the time, it’s not of the variety you’d find at large coed school football games, with people waving banners, cheering, and painting their faces with the school colors. It’s more of a low-key, but constant, presence. MHC is unique in so many ways, and those who aren’t turned off by it come to love the school with a passion. Loyalty runs strong. (This also applies to alumnae.) You’ll see students actually buying and wearing items from the school store that have the school name on them. Even when criticizing aspects of the school, students are doing it because they love it and want it to be the best it can be.

Getting Tickets

There is no need to get tickets. Anyone can come to watch a home event.

Best Place to Take a Walk

The paths around Upper Lake are the best places to walk. Also, try the cross-country course.

Did You Know? Orchards Golf Course became famous in the summer of 2004, when Mount Holyoke hosted the U.S. Women's Open.
