College Prowler Take
Drugs exist on the MHC campus, but in general, the drug scene is pretty tame. Yes, alcohol is ever-present (often hidden away in a secret stash in your room or your friend’s room), but as one student said, serious abuse of any drug, including alcohol, is rare. There are far more alcohol-related referrals than drug-related referrals, which tells you something right there—you won’t find many hardcore drugs on this campus. It’s also significant that there are many more referrals than arrests. Public Safety is not likely to arrest you for alcohol use—things just don’t get that wild, although you can still get caught for excessive drinking, and then you’ll probably get referred to a treatment program. You can completely avoid the drug scene at Mount Holyoke if you want to because it’s not that pervasive. However, if you remain at the school for any length of time, you’ll probably encounter at least one person who regularly gets drunk or high. The trick is, if you are such a person, keep things carefully concealed because if you’re caught, you’ll get a bad reputation. Besides alcohol, caffeine is probably the most widely used drug—the favorite of students pulling all-nighters.

The Pioneer Valley has a very big drug culture (mostly weed), but MHC itself is a largely untouched. Extremely heavy drinking or drug use usually occurs off campus. There is a very forgiving drug/alcohol policy that focuses on addressing addiction issues, not arresting offenders.

There is some drug use, but not very much. Neither drugs nor alcohol are central to campus life, although there are some groups that are very into both. |

I remember when one girl got busted for having marijuana—the incident made college newspaper headlines. It just seemed so unthinkable that someone could do something that stupid and irresponsible on a campus known for attracting intelligent and responsible women. I don’t want to say that no one on campus ever does drugs—perhaps some people do, but you never hear about it, and none of your friends do it. |

Several of my roommates had pot in our rooms, and there were several times when I got stoned. However, it generally seems to happen off campus, and drug use is typically frowned upon. |
