Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Having a diverse range of “hotties” is not one of the main selling points of Mount Holyoke. Instead, the academics and sense of community tend to take first place in one’s choice to come here. So, the forging of a romantic relationship is somewhat of a secondary thing, although by no means do Mount Holyoke women turn off their hormones when they enter the gates. Romance is alive and well on campus, if kept somewhat subdued to a low steady hum. Since the student body is composed of all women and there's an open and somewhat experimental atmosphere on campus, there is perhaps more than average lesbian activity. However, it may just seem that way because, after all, there are no guys to gossip about, unless it’s someone else’s boyfriend or the random guy you met last weekend at a UMass party. Same-sex relationships gather all of the drama you’d expect to come with the possibility of love and breakups between floormates or classmates.

If guys are what you’re looking for, you can find them at other places in the Pioneer Valley, most readily at the other three colleges in the area that have them. It can feel a little desperate at times being the only one among your friends who doesn’t have a boyfriend back home, but don’t settle for the first drunken frat boy who comes along. Mount Holyoke women could be promiscuous, but they hide it very well if they are. In fact, most students are committed to upholding the fine tradition of relationships summed up in this saying: “Smith to bed, Mount Holyoke to wed.” Then again, maybe we just want to look better than Smith.

It's a Women's College

It is an all women's college, and you won't find many guys on campus or in classrooms. However, there are few from neighboring colleges (UMass, Amherst, Hampshire) that take classes at MHC.

Sweet, and Quite a Variety. Boys, on the Other Hand . . .

I have made wonderful friends here, and I truly believe there is a group of girls for everyone. However, boys are not readily available, so you need to be okay spending a lot of girl time wih your friends.

I would say guys on campus are

What kinds of relationships have you had since coming to school?

How would you rate the social scene on campus?

Facts

Social Scene

For many students, the social scene does not include guys at all, or if it does, their role is limited to cameo appearances in a class that meets twice a week. However, for those who do want to meet guys, the places to look are at the three colleges in the area that have them: Hampshire, Amherst, and UMass. It is definitely possible to meet someone while at MHC (and for those students who prefer romance with women, it is more than definitely possible), although campus parties that attract mostly men looking to get drunk and possibly laid are not the best places to look for anyone who will make a lasting commitment. Social life on campus is mostly rather laid-back, which is good for those who want to avoid the wild side, but many do exercise their creativity in this area and host dorm room parties that rival anything you'll find somewhere else.

Hookups or Relationships?

If you're really looking for a random hookup, you can probably find one off campus, if not on campus. However, a lot of students are in serious relationships. Many come to college already in a long-distance relationship. and those who aren't often find someone while at college. This happens to such an extent that one can begin to wonder whether anyone is still single.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

It all depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking for a woman, chances are you'll find her while you're engaged in your daily activities: perhaps she's the person who sits next to you in class, or the person who lives down the hall from you. If you're looking for a man, try taking a class or joining a club at another college. These are probably the best, least risky ways to go, although they don't guarantee success (but then again, nothing really does). If you're looking for something a bit wilder, try going to a UMass frat party or to TAP (The Amherst Party, mostly full of beer and beer-drinking guys, but hey, it's almost an initiation rite to say you've been there once). You will find guys there, and you might even find a good one—once you're both sober.

Dress Code

There is no dress code at Mount Holyoke. Many women feel comfortable wearing their pajamas to class. Some will dress up—not many, but enough so that those who do aren't stared at as if they were some sort of freak. Basically, you can wear anything you want, from cloaks and Renaissance dresses, to short skirts and makeup, to old sweatshirts and baseball caps—and it'll be fine. No worries about whether or not you have the latest fashions. Of course, most students you will see will be wearing the typical shirt and jeans, thrown on five minutes before going off to class, but that's because we're college students.
