Having a diverse range of “hotties” is not one of the main selling points of Mount Holyoke. Instead, the academics and sense of community tend to take first place in one’s choice to come here. So, the forging of a romantic relationship is somewhat of a secondary thing, although by no means do Mount Holyoke women turn off their hormones when they enter the gates. Romance is alive and well on campus, if kept somewhat subdued to a low steady hum. Since the student body is composed of all women and there's an open and somewhat experimental atmosphere on campus, there is perhaps more than average lesbian activity. However, it may just seem that way because, after all, there are no guys to gossip about, unless it’s someone else’s boyfriend or the random guy you met last weekend at a UMass party. Same-sex relationships gather all of the drama you’d expect to come with the possibility of love and breakups between floormates or classmates.
If guys are what you’re looking for, you can find them at other places in the Pioneer Valley, most readily at the other three colleges in the area that have them. It can feel a little desperate at times being the only one among your friends who doesn’t have a boyfriend back home, but don’t settle for the first drunken frat boy who comes along. Mount Holyoke women could be promiscuous, but they hide it very well if they are. In fact, most students are committed to upholding the fine tradition of relationships summed up in this saying: “Smith to bed, Mount Holyoke to wed.” Then again, maybe we just want to look better than Smith.
