Quick Stats
Best Place to Take Your ParentsCollege Prowler Take
There isn’t much in the immediate area of the College, except for Fedora’s, Main Moon, and Carmine’s—go there for a bite to eat if you don't want to drive anywhere. There are also some places in the Village Commons that will deliver to campus. If you have a car, you’ll easily be able to get to Subway, Friendly’s, Big Y for groceries, and a few other places that are a mile or less from campus. (The desperate have been known to walk this distance, but it’s uphill most of the way back from the shopping plaza. Walking a mile in the freezing cold of winter isn’t exactly fun and is not recommended.) Most students, when they want a night out, take the bus or drive to Amherst or Northampton, where there are restaurants aplenty. Northampton, in particular, has a tremendous variety—just walk down Main Street, and you’re sure to find something that appeals to you. Most places are relatively cheap, too: $5–$10 will get you a decent meal somewhere. If you want 24-hour eating, you’ll have to try a fast food place, as most restaurants around here close at or before midnight. In the beginning of each school year, you’ll be inundated with coupon books and advertisements from area restaurants. Save these—they are likely the only student specials you’ll get. Try the Thirsty Mind for a place to hang out and do your homework. On weeknights, it’s almost always full of students. Plus, you get the convenience of being able to use your MHCXPress account—a debit account granted to all students—both here and at Tailgate Picnic, so even if you don’t have cash on you, you’ll be able to swipe your OneCard and get that coffee or sandwich.

The Village Commons, right across...
The Village Commons, right across the street, has Chinese, a few American restaurants, a deli, and a coffeeshop. If you have a car, about a mile and a half down the street in South Hadley is a Friendly's, Subway, and a few pizza places. Chicopee also has a number of restaurants, including fast food and sit-down places. And, of course, Amherst and Northampton are both a short bus ride away and have a wide variety of restaurants.
I recommend Ichiban in Chicopee for Japanese and Chinese, Antonio's in Amherst for pizza by the slice, Viva in Northampton for fresh pasta, and Haymarket in Northampton for coffee or juice.

Across the street from the school...
Across the street from the school is the Village Commons, which has a number of restaurants, including Autentica, which is a pretty good Mexican place, as well as Tailgate, which has great sandwiches. A short drive or bus ride—20 to 30 minutes—takes you to Amherst or Northampton, where there are lots of restaurants. My favorites in Northampton are Thai Corner, an inexpensive and delicious Thai place, and Spoleto, a pricey but well-worth-it Italian place. In Northampton, you can find cuisine from every corner of the globe, which is great.

There are a couple of restaurants across the street from the College, but most of them are outside of a student's budget. The free PVTA bus goes to both Amherst and Northampton, however, for better food choices.

I usually went to Veracruzana or Bueno Y Sano in Amherst, because I love Mexican food. However, the Chinese food here sucks. |

Between South Hadley, Amherst, and...
Between South Hadley, Amherst, and Northampton, there are a ton of great restaurants for just about any kind of food you might want. Pasta E Basta has excellent Italian food that’s pretty cheap. The Teapot in Northampton has great Chinese food. Main Moon, across from the College, delivers Chinese food, but isn’t the best. |
