College Prowler Take
The weather in the Pioneer Valley during most of the school year is cold—frigid even. The wind howls right through the entire valley in the winter. Snow is a permanent sight from late December through March, and the lakes will remain frozen over for an even longer period of time. Basically, be ready for long winters, and dress warmly. Boots will help you out—the ground becomes treacherous after a snowfall with ice melting during the day and refreezing at night. Some winters garner more snow than others, with the pattern seeming to be that every other winter sees a heavy snowfall and storms lasting well into early spring. Learn to love the snow if you don’t already! The other side of the weather here is the experience of absolutely gorgeous days in the fall. You will get beautiful, deep colors in the leaves on the trees. You will also get relatively warm weather through mid-October, guaranteed, and if you’re lucky, into early November. Enjoy this time, and go outside as often as you can because once the leaves have fallen, the first really cold spell won’t be long in coming. Endure the winter and the mud season of March, when things are melting but not quite ready to become green yet, and you’ll be rewarded with another season of warm weather. Just be ready for April to be a freakish month, as both 90-degree weather and snowstorms have been known to come within days of each other. Be prepared for summer to seem as outlandishly hot as winter was outlandishly cold!

South Hadley is in New England, and New England means variable. There’s usually a brief spell of hot weather in the fall and spring semesters (and by hot, I mean temps in the 80s or 90s), so it would be a good idea to bring some shorts and T-shirts. We also experience cold weather (usually during a season we call ‘winter’), with temps anywhere from 60 to 20 degrees. Bring hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, boots for snow, and jackets. Layers are also good. |

Rain, Snow, and Sleet, Oh My!
B
I'm from the Northwest, so the only striking thing about winter in Massachusetts for me was how well the city took care of the roads. As a result, ice is rarely an issue when crossing streets and the college cares well for the sidewalks in bad weather. The most important thing for any incoming student who is not from New England is to invest in a good pair of rain boots. During the fall and spring there will be downpours and rain boots will save you miserable hours in class with wet feet. Additionally, umbrellas work quite well because rain in Massachusetts is rarely accompanied by heavy rain.

The weather is quite chilly and fickle. Then again, this is coming from a Californian, but it stays cold until about mid-April and, even then, you’re usually in for a surprise or two. |

Winters are cold. Last year during J-term, the temperature got to negative-40 degrees with wind chill. Bring a really warm coat or a cloak, which are the latest fashion trend at Mount Holyoke. Keep in mind that you will need shorts and T-shirts for the beginning and end of the school year. |
