College Prowler Take

For many people, it could be easy to gain the Freshman 15 at Muhlenberg because the food is generally decent. The meal plans work on a “swipe system;” depending on the level of your meal plan, you have a different number of swipes per week or semester. These swipes can be used in Garden Room or General’s Quarters (GQ). Garden Room is more like a cafeteria, and it is all-you-can-eat for one swipe. Garden Room is good when you want to eat a lot or have a healthier eating habit. The frozen yogurt machines are also a staple of Garden Room, and you will often hear people commenting on the “fro yo quality” because after going to Muhlenberg for a semester, you will develop a type of frozen yogurt elite ranking that only Muhlenberg pros understand. One note of caution: it seems that by the end of the week, the chefs take a break and the pickings get very slim.

With the exception of the great Saturday brunch, most people stick to GQ on the weekends. GQ is where you find more of the fast food type of meals. One swipe is worth $4.10, and you have to swipe again, or pay with cash or debit, if you want more than that. Tuesdays and Fridays are “Pasta Day” in GQ, and this is probably the most popular food on campus. The lines go out the door during the busiest lunch hours, but it is well worth the wait if you have the time. If you eat there enough, a lot of the staff gets to know you, and does not even need to ask how you want your pasta.

Although the food isn’t bad, it can definitely get redundant because GQ almost always has the same options, and Garden Room has a weekly schedule that is repeated throughout the semester.

The food, while not home-cooked, is actually very good. I’ve had friends from other colleges come to visit and comment on the quality of our food. One of my favorite things about the dining hall is that they have a ‘Napkin Board.’ Students write down likes/dislikes/comments/compliments on a napkin and stick it to the board. Every so often, the staff will write up a response, and hopefully, accommodate your request.

The food is good for college food, but you get sick of eating the same things over and over and over again.

Nothing compares to a home-cooked meal, but bagel bombs at GQ are the best breakfast food and late-night snack!

I really like the food on campus, especially the mozzarella sticks and chicken parmesan. I love the ‘hi-tech’ atmosphere of the General’s Quarters.

Did You Know?

Garden Room trays make excellent sleds! While GQ trays are easier to come by, the Garden Room trays are actually bigger and more slippery. Be nice, though, and return them when you’re finished with your fun.

Muhlenberg students write comments and questions about the dining services and post them on the Napkin Board as you exit Garden Room. Every few days, the staff responds to these comments, and most of the time, they do their best to accommodate student requests.
