Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Campus rules are not necessarily lenient. However, Campus Safety doesn't spend every waking moment looking to punish students, either. You really have to be trying in order to "get into trouble." In other words, if you are doing something that could lead to consequences, keep the door closed, the noise down, and be discrete. Campus Safety will usually leave the party alone. Otherwise, a resident adviser or Campus Safety will notice, and there will be due consequences. On the flip side, if a student is in particular trouble, they will be taken care of and their usual punishment will be lessened (if not eliminated). It is also important to keep in mind that RAs do check all of the dorms before leaving for breaks. So, be sure to hide anything that could earn you a fine. The RAs do not look through every drawer and corner for anything that could get you into trouble, though. But, if they see it, they have to report it.

Some students feel that the campus police can be overprotective, especially when parties and alcohol are involved. But it is important to remember that the campus police are not there to spoil students’ fun. They really do care about every student’s safety and hope that people get the proper help they need. Also, most students would agree that Campus Safety is fair when a student breaks a rule. As long as the student is respectful and cooperative, they will very rarely receive an arbitrary punishment.

Semi-Strict Campus?

Muhlenberg choses to handles most problems including violence and underage drinking internally. These students are brought before a judiciary panel where they are faced with punishments befitting what they did wrong. However, the proper thing for most students to do is to not be overt with drinking.

Be Smart

As a freshman, it's pretty easy to get busted for partying in the dorms if you're loud, especially during quiet hours. As an upperclassman off-campus, you have to be careful about noise complaints from neighbors. If you keep these under control, you'll probably be fine. If you do get written up, your first offense is usually a warning or community service.

The School Is Pretty Strict

The school has an amnesty policy where if a friend of the intoxicated contacts campus safety, the intoxicated will not be penalized by the school except the student will be sent to a counselling class to make sure the student does not have a serious problem with alcohol abuse. However, whenever campus safety is called in one of these cases, the local police also is present and gives the student a citation which could go on the student's record. The school along with the local police also patrol around the campus on weekends which sometimes makes you feel like your in a prison.
