College Prowler Take

Computers are a huge part of college life. As a result, there are very few students who do not bring their own computers. A lot of professors and student organizations will communicate through e-mail, so it is not unusual for students to check their e-mail compulsively, and all students are assigned Muhlenberg e-mail accounts as freshmen. Muhlenberg asks all students to have their computers registered to be part of their MuleNet. You will need to pay $65 to have this done, which causes complaints from many students because they find it unnecessary. You can find labs in the library, any of the dorms, and in several of the academic buildings. Since most students do have their own computers, there is hardly ever a problem finding an open computer. Free printing is also available in the labs, so many students will bring their own computer, but not a printer.

Opinions of OIT depend largely on personal experiences. Some people have great success stories of OIT saving them when they’ve had computer problems, while others will tell you that the staff was totally unhelpful. Muhlenberg’s technology is top notch in some areas, but there are other areas that students have complaints about. You can always find an open computer to work on, but some of the computers can be really slow. It is free to use the printers, but they are often out of paper. In general, students are pleased with the Internet connection. This is important to college students since so much communication is done through the Internet. Muhlenberg has not gone wireless yet, but it’s something that they are talking about for the future.

There are so many labs around campus that I would be surprised if anybody said that they had a hard time finding a computer, a quiet lab, or a working printer. OIT works hard to fix what it can, but it only has five people and about a thousand computers they have to service, not to mention the students who come in with computer problems. Bringing your own computer adds privacy and ease, but I wouldn't say it is necessary.

I suggest bringing your own computer because college students live on Instant Messenger. Even at a small school like Muhlenberg, people send Instant Messages to set up everything from weekend plans to study sessions.

You should bring your own computer to any college because you will live on it! Laptop or desktop is a personal choice. Although I prefer desktops, laptops are nice because of their small size. You’ll find you have much more space, and it’s easier to move.

The computer labs are pretty available, but they can get crowded around finals. I would absolutely bring your own computer because the Internet often becomes your connection to friends from home when you’re in college.

The computer labs always have room, but I would recommend bringing your own computer anyway because Instant Messenger is a pretty big deal. Also, it’s easier to motivate yourself to do work if the computer is right there in your room instead of down the hall.

Did You Know?

Muhlenberg computer labs are only equipped with PCs, not Macs.

The Office of Information Technology’s (OIT) Student Help Desk is open seven days a week. It is located in the lower level of Ettinger.

Muhlenberg students are provided with free e-mail accounts their freshman year that they keep for all four years. Many professors and other members of the Muhlenberg faculty use these accounts to send important information to students, so make sure to check your e-mail regularly or have it forwarded to your other accounts.

Unlike some other colleges, Muhlenberg’s OIT offers free computer assistance to its students. While computer problems are always stressful, at least you won’t be paying to get the help you need!
