College Prowler Take

Diversity is not something for which Muhlenberg is well known. This isn’t to say that minorities are not present on campus, but racial diversity is definitely lacking. The large majority of Muhlenberg students are white from the same general geographic and economic background. But when you look at diversity as being broader than just these areas, that’s when Muhlenberg has more to offer. Religiously, Muhlenberg is much more diverse than many of the towns and high schools students come from. The student population is also diverse when considering the types of people and eclectic variety of majors. Some students come here for the great pre-med program, and some come because they have heard about Muhlenberg’s excellent reputation for theater. Just because a lot of people here may be of the same race, it doesn’t mean that they don’t have different lifestyles that you can learn about.

While the ‘Berg may not have a large representation of racial minorities on campus, other types of diversity are present. There are a variety of religions and sexual orientations. Although the student population may be homogeneous racially, there are still many opportunities to learn about different cultures. Muhlenberg puts a lot of effort in teaching students about different cultures and stresses acceptance of all types of people.

Although the campus itself is not very diverse, there are a lot of events on campus to promote diversity awareness.

In terms of ethnicity and race, the campus is not very diverse. The campus is diverse, however, when looking at the types of people. I mean, when you realize that our top two majors are probably theater and pre-med, you can imagine how different the students are. There are also a lot of religious differences. We may be a Lutheran college, but that doesn’t seem to deter people from other religions.

Compared to my high school, Muhlenberg is definitely lacking in diversity. I think it’s important to realize that there are students who are minorities, and they don’t seem to have any problems. It’s not like Muhlenberg isn’t accepting of people; if anything, I think Muhlenberg is more accepting of all people than my high school ever was.

I’ve learned about a lot of different cultures in college, but not because of the racial diversity on campus. We don’t have that much, but I have learned things in class.

I come from a town where I didn’t know one Jewish person growing up. Muhlenberg has exposed me to a lot of people who are different religions and have different beliefs. If you mean racially, though, we aren’t very diverse in that way.

Facts

Economic Status

The majority of students come from middle- to upper-class economic backgrounds. While there are a lot of students who are from typical middle class families, it is not uncommon to notice the new BMW in the parking lot either.

Gay Pride

Muhlenberg is very accepting of gay students on campus. Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) sponsors several events throughout the year to promote acceptance and tolerance. Besides these structured events, the campus is just really accepting in general. While the exact number of homosexual students may not be known, it's not something that is hidden on campus.

Minority Clubs on Campus

There are several minority clubs at Muhlenberg, but they aren't among the most visible organizations on campus. Muhlenberg does what it can to promote acceptance and learning about different cultures; these groups just aren't the most advertised and have fewer members than a lot of other clubs: Asian Students Association/International Students Association (ASA/ISA), Black Students Association (BSA), La Comunidad Latina, The Soul Sound Steppers, MINT, and The Gay Straight Alliance (GSA).

Most Common Religions

The three biggest religious groups on campus are Catholic (about 33% of students), Jewish (about 28%), and Protestant (about 25%). Muhlenberg is a Evangelical Lutheran Church college

Political Activity

If you’re interested in politics, there are plenty of opportunities to participate in political activities on campus. Several organizations sponsor letter writing campaigns, and there is a group that promotes voting registration. The College Republicans and College Democrats are fairly visible on campus, and they host a variety of speakers, trips, and discussions throughout the semester.
