Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Muhlenberg has many strong suits. Diversity, however, is not considered to be one of them. There are some minority groups on campus, but they are greatly outnumbered by the abundance of white, upper-middle-class students. On top of that, most students are from somewhere on the East Coast. Some students will argue, however, that Muhlenberg makes up for its lack of geographical, socioeconomic, and racial uniqueness with its religious diversity. Muhlenberg may be associated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, but less than a third of the student population is actually Protestant. The majority of students is either Jewish or Catholic. Numerous sexual orientations are also present on campus, and the Gay-Straight Alliance is great at regularly hosting events to raise awareness. Muhlenberg is considered to be academically diverse, as well. For example, it is entirely possible, if not common, to find theatre majors chilling out in the quad with pre-med students.

The question of diversity and what it means for Muhlenberg is often debated. Some argue that the school needs to work on expanding its ethnic and racial pool. Others feel both religious diversity and academic diversity are enough. Either way, most do agree that no matter the kind of diversity being debated, most students are tolerant of every sort of background. So, even those students who fall within a minority group very rarely feel that they are not accepted into the ‘Berg community.

Lack of Diversity at Muhlenberg

The cultural diversity at Muhlenberg is lacking. The diversity rate is less than 10% across all academic years, and therefore, those of cultural diversity stand out at the school. However, those of ethic diversity are generally accepted among the student population.

Very White

Muhlenberg's student body is notoriously white. The diversity has increased slightly in the past few years, but a lot of times it feels forced, and students of similar cultural backgrounds tend to stick together. Religiously the campus is much more diverse, though.

Facts

Gay Pride

Although it is not necessarily one of the biggest groups on campus, the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) undoubtedly has a strong presence. Many students are generally very accepting of the gay community, so it is easy to imagine the high turnout and anticipation of the GSA's most popular events.

Political Activity

There is a fair share of groups and activities for those students who are politically savvy. The two foremost of these are the College Democrats and the College Republicans, who both promote the ideas of their respective parties while encouraging Muhlenberg students to vote on and discuss current sociopolitical issues.

Economic Status

There are plenty of students from typical middle-class families. But most of the students who go to Muhlenberg are from middle- to upper-class backgrounds. In other words, although many students receive financial aid, it's hard to miss the girls strutting their designer clothes down Academic Row.

Most Common Religions

The biggest religious communities amongst the student body are Catholic (about 30 percent), Jewish (about 30 percent), and Protestant (about 20 percent). Muhlenberg is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Minority Clubs on Campus

There are several minority clubs at Muhlenberg, but they aren't among the most visible organizations on campus. Muhlenberg does what it can to promote acceptance and learning about different cultures, but the minority groups just aren't the most advertised and have fewer members than a lot of other clubs. The minority groups include: Asian Students Association/International Students Association (ASA/ISA), Black Students Association (BSA), Comunidad Latina, Soul Sound Steppers, MINT, and Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA).
