College Prowler Take

Those who have decided to go Greek at Muhlenberg feel that it has been great for their social life, and it has made a big difference in their college experience. They have made great friends and have opportunities to participate in a variety of activities on campus. Those who don’t belong to a fraternity or sorority are usually pretty indifferent to Greek life. Since Muhlenberg does not allow freshmen to pledge, exposure to Greek life as a freshman mainly consists of parties. A lot of freshmen, especially girls, like to make their way over to the frat houses for the dance parties. After freshman year, the Greek impact on students’ social scene seems to die down, unless you or your friends decide to become a part of it by pledging. A fair percentage of the campus belongs to a fraternity or a sorority, but it’s not very exclusive. Students don’t feel pressured to join in order to make friends, and most Greek events are open to the entire campus. Most students will agree that their social lives have not been greatly impacted by their decision not to join.

If you’ve always been interested in joining a Greek organization, Muhlenberg’s Greek life has a lot to offer. Fraternities and sororities perform community service in various ways on campus, but they are typically known for Greek Week and the parties. The frats hit it big with events such as Mardi Gras and Beach Bash. The outcome of Greek Week events doesn’t really matter to most on campus, but everyone knows it’s going on because of all of the people in matching shirts for an entire week.

Greek life can be big, but it’s not like at some schools where you don’t even talk to people who are in other sororities. It is quite possible for girls in different sororities to live together and get along just fine.

To people who are Greek, it dominates the social scene. If you’re not part of that, you can go through college without ever feeling like you missed out on anything. It’s all up to the individual person.

Greek life is what you want it to...

Greek life is what you want it to be. If you plan on pledging and becoming involved in it, it can easily become the main thing in your life on campus. If you want to join and still do other things, you can do that. Lastly, there are plenty of people on campus who have nothing to do with Greek life and still have a great time.

Greek life definitely doesn’t...

Greek life definitely doesn’t dominate the social scene. This is partly due to the fact that students aren’t allowed to pledge until their sophomore year, which I think is a great idea. This allows potential pledges to really settle themselves into college life, both academically and socially.

The Greeks bring an aspect to student life that is quite different from the other organizations. This is neither good nor bad. Although they provide social scenes, there are many other things to do on campus than go to a frat on a Saturday night.
