Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Muhlenberg’s campus has many beautiful qualities. Fortunately, its student body happens to be one of them. There are as many students who believe they need to freshen up in the morning as there are students who can simply roll out of bed looking gorgeous. Also, the gender ratio is only 60 percent girls and 40 percent guys, which is pretty balanced, so there are plenty of dating and hookup opportunities for both sexes. Sometimes, the small student body gives the impression that the dating pool is really small or that all of the “good ones” are taken. But students can be pleasantly surprised when they find a new group of people or go to a house party they have never been to before. Also, since Muhlenberg’s campus is so small, it is very easy to get to know that cutie you have been eyeing for a while.

The one downside to a small campus is that gossip gets around pretty quickly, so chances are that by Monday almost everyone will know about that random hookup from the weekend. Yet, the gossip circle does not stop students from letting loose at parties. Essentially, there is still a balanced amount of students looking for a hookup as there is a group looking for a relationship, and Muhlenberg’s size is definitely a plus for the school’s committed couples. The walk from one end of campus to the other is pretty short, and the two of you are bound to bump into each other at least once a day while walking to classes.

Mix of People

There is a nice mix of kids at the school. There are kids from across the country there, but for the most part there are kids from New Jersey. The dress and stuff is the same as you probably would see at most high schools, unless you had to wear uniforms. The kids are easy to get along with and there is almost always something to do.

Guys Not Worth the Effort

I've found that as a fairly attractive female, it's very hard to find men on this campus, or at least ones that are worth any kind of effort. We're split 60-40 female to male, so the odds are already against us. When it comes to dating, the majority of the "good ones" are taken, and the large gay population on campus limits options even more. The rest tend to be immature.

However, I will note that the guys on campus are pretty attractive, especially the athletes and fraternity guys (DTD and ATO mostly).

Guys and Dolls

Everyone is very friendly and open. We have a very racially white campus (only 12% of the student body is non-white). We have a fairly clear division of Athletics and Artsy types at Muhlenberg.

Facts

Social Scene

When walking down Academic Row, it is not uncommon to see students going out of their way to say hello or to strike up a conversation. You might find some cliques when in Seegers Union or at a party, but even most cliques make a point of being friendly. Overall, it's pretty easy to meet all sorts of people on campus.

Hookups or Relationships?

There is a pretty decent mix of people who want a relationship and those who do not. However, because of Muhlenberg's small student body, it is hard to avoid bumping into that random hookup from Saturday night. In fact, you may end up bumping into that same person multiple times in one day, nevermind a week. The bottom line is Muhlenberg students get to know each other very quickly, so it is not uncommon to find the couple who were "just hooking up" toying with the idea of a committed relationship.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Since so much of your time is spent in the classrooms, or in the dorms, these are probably the most common places to meet a significant other. The dorms are really good for this because it's such a relaxed atmosphere. It's not like when you're in high school and you need to make plans to go over to someone's house to see them. In dorms, you just walk over to someone's room any time you want to hang out, or just to say hi. This is especially true in freshman dorms because a lot of people leave their doors open and are eager to meet new people. Joining clubs can be a good way to meet people with similar interests. You can also meet people just by hanging out in Seegers, or on the lawn, when it's nice out. If you’re looking to meet people in less of a “school” atmosphere, hit the frat or house parties on the weekends. Tired of Muhlenberg students? There are also clubs and bars nearby that a lot of college students go to at night. Remember that there are several other colleges such as Lehigh that are within a short driving distance.

Dress Code

Although there is some variety, most students usually go for the preppy look. The students who decide to take an artistic license with their dressing, however, do not necessarily get strange looks. They may stand out, but not uncomfortably so. And, of course, there are many students who stroll on over to class in just their sweats and T-shirt (students certainly buy plenty of each at the bookstore).
