Party Scene Sucks

Muhlenberg's party scene has gotten progressively worse throughout my time here. The school has cracked down on fraternities so not all of them have parties. Sports houses have parties sometimes but after freshman year it gets cliquey and if your friends don't party there, you feel out of place. Bars are popular if you're 21, but they are SUPER strict with IDs, so if you're underage, you're out of luck. I love my school, but its DEFINITELY no party school.

Pros and Cons

Small school. Campus shuttle offers limited rides on limited days of the week. Very little happening on campus--which helps your G.P.A.! Campus does have not have public transportation running through so you need to have car. Taxi's are expensive and a hassle as they take over an hour to arrive and you need to call ahead to reserve.

Professors are caring and helpful.

There has been more than four safety incidents on campus this year (gunman and robberies).

Residential life is not helpful and is not truthful about situations.

A-

Yay Muhlenberg!

If you want to attend a small, liberal arts school that offers a very diverse selection of study programs - our top 2 departments are Bio-Chem and Theatre & Dance - then this is the school for you. We have very nice facilities, decent food, many clubs/organizations you can get involved in, and a beautiful campus.

Facts

Traditions
  • Activities Fair: Every fall semester, all of the student organizations set up tables outside of Seegers Union and vie for new members.
  • Candlelight Carols: A service of Candlelight Carols has been a Muhlenberg tradition since 1958. Held in Egner Memorial Chapel the weekend before finals during the fall semester, this beautiful service features performances from the Muhlenberg College Choir, along with student and faculty readings. Tickets are free, but seating is limited, so you need to turn in a lottery form.
  • Geek Week: The fraternities and sororities have Greek Week, and the academic clubs have Geek Week! Different academic clubs on campus have the option of entering into different competitions with other clubs on campus.
  • Jefferson Field Day: Each year, the Friday after the last day of classes is Jefferson Field Day. Students from Jefferson Elementary School in Allentown join students on campus for a day of track and field events. A huge number of Muhlenberg students and faculty spend the day running and helping out with the event. It’s a great way to have some fun before finals.
  • Marathon Theatre: During a weekend in the fall semester, members of the Muhlenberg Theatre Association participate in Marathon Theatre. For 24 hours, they put on short dance numbers and skits in order to raise money for different charities. The event takes place in Parents Plaza, so it’s fun to stop by and watch on your way in and out of Seegers.
  • Midnight Breakfast: Muhlenberg recently started a new tradition during finals week at the end of the year. On the Friday night that begins the weekend before finals, Garden Room hosts a free breakfast at midnight for students. One of the best parts of the event is that a lot of faculty and staff turn out to serve the food and socialize with students.
  • Mr. Muhlenberg: During the spring semester, Muhlenberg holds a competition to see who will be crowned the next Mr. Muhlenberg. Several guys from each class year compete against each other in a variety of events such as swim wear, evening wear, and talent. Students vote for who they want to win by purchasing tickets for the event with their favorite guy’s picture, and a board of students and faculty acts as judges on the night of the event to choose who will win overall. While some may complain that it’s sexist, it’s a really entertaining night, and everyone has a lot of fun participating.
  • Red Doors: As a sign of welcome, all of the doors on Muhlenberg’s campus are painted bright red.
  • Through the Red Doors: Through the Red Doors is an event at the end of the spring semester that is run by Admissions for accepted students. A lot of current students enjoy participating in this day by serving on panels, giving tours, or representing different aspects of campus at tables during an information fair.
Urban Legends
  • A bat affectionately named Bernard lives in the chapel and frequently makes appearances during the Candlelight Carols each December.
  • Robertson is haunted by the ghost of a former member of the Muhlenberg faculty whose house was torn down to build the new dorms.
  • The Gabriel House, the building that is now used for Muhlenberg’s night school, is haunted by the ghost of an African American man who is believed to have once been a Muhlenberg maintenance man.
  • The Muhlenberg mascot was almost a turtle because of the species of bog turtle named after naturalist Gotthilf Henry Ernest Muhlenberg.
  • There are many stories about what Victor’s Lament actually is supposed to be. Some say that it’s a war veteran rising from a wheelchair, and others say that it looks like a large letter "M" when seen from an airplane.
