Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Just because Muhlenberg’s party scene is not bursting with insanity and scandal does not mean students do not know how to have fun. Most students are just as content with keeping things low-key with some close friends as they are with living it up at a club. Sometimes Muhlenberg’s nightlife can be deceiving to freshmen since they have the most limited options. They are not immediately invited or allowed in frat and house parties, and so they stick to the parties and dances the Muhlenberg Activities Council organizes on the weekends. Also, the Gay-Straight Alliance and the Muhlenberg Theatre Association co-organize a night where all students can go to Stonewall, one of Allentown’s most popular gay bars. Once freshmen get to know upperclassmen, then they can be found at the parties. But, for the most part, the party scene does not really open up until sophomore year when students know more people who live in MILE or other off-campus housing. Others make their break into the party scene when they pledge for Greek organizations.

Otherwise, students have an easier time turning up the fun when they turn 21. Although they are few and far between, several bars and clubs are popular amongst Muhlenberg students in Allentown. Some include the Crocodile Rock Café and Banana Joe’s, and some underage students try to sneak into Maingate, as well. However, coffeehouses like Hava Java are a safer bet for underagers (and are just as much fun).

Pretty Good.

You'll have one great night out of the weekend usually. Fridays are dull. But Saturday you can always find a party.

Limited

Nightlife at Muhlenberg pretty much only consists of house parties and bar hopping. Since it's such a small school, it's hard to meet new people and many students find themselves doing the same things weekend after weekend. I feel as though i'm missing out on the real college experience by being here at muhlenberg sometimes.

Greek Life

NOT ALOT unless you join greek fraternities or sororities. Rushing is only available sophomore year.

Parties are not very prevalent, but you can always find them if you make an effort.

ALOT OF smoking (weed). At night on the way back from the library, the freshman quad REEKS of Marajuana.

My class was the first class to have the most students get sent to the hospital for alcohol poisiong. that could be problematic... basically, its there if you want it.

What is the party scene like on campus?

What’s the best way to get to the popular nightlife spots?

Facts

Club Crawler

While Muhlenberg isn’t located in the middle of a huge city, there are several clubs that are within a short driving distance. If you head into downtown Allentown, there are a few clubs within minutes of one another. Remember that Philadelphia is just over an hour away, so you can always head into Philly if you find the club scene lacking.

Bar Prowler

Bars are popular places to hang out because there are several that are really close to campus. You don’t need to be 21 to get into all of them either, so they can be good for mixed groups of friends. Some people can go to get drinks, and others can go just for the food and atmosphere.

Organization Parties

The Muhlenberg Activities Council (MAC) hosts parties in Seegers Union. MAC parties can be pretty dead most of the time since people usually try to find a house party first, and MAC parties are usually made up of freshmen since they have the hardest time finding parties or alcohol. But, if you go with a group of friends, the MAC parties can be a lot of fun. Other groups host their own parties, but these are not nearly as publicized, as they are usually hosted at a house.

Maingate Nightclub

Maingate can be a popular spot for Muhlenberg students because it is so close to campus, and it sponsors Muhlenberg nights throughout the year. Some students complain that it has a somewhat sketchy atmosphere, but it can be fun, too.

Stonewall

The Stonewall is one of Allentown's more popular gay bars, and its hallmark is the ever-entertaining drag shows. Ever since the Gay-Straight Alliance and the Muhlenberg Theatre Association started hosting student events here, Stonewall has increasingly become a popular club for both gay and straight students.

The Bar with No Name

A lot of people don’t know about this club because it’s located in the Holiday Inn, but it’s cool because of the hours and lack of cover charge. The Bar with No Name is open seven days a week and has a happy hour each weeknight, which can be pretty nice if you have random days off during the week. It’s more upscale than the other nightclubs, though, so proper dress is required.

Chicken Lounge

The Chicken Lounge is a five-minute drive from campus, and it’s a popular place to go for snacks and drinks. It may seem sketchy from the outside, but it’s really quite cozy and relaxed once you go inside. You can sit at the bar in the center, or chill out at the tables and booths. They have a good variety of food on the menu, but most people will tell you that the nachos are a must for every Chicken Lounge outing!

Bethlehem Brew Works

This is a nice place to go for something different because it’s located in the Historic District of Bethlehem. In addition to having a bar scene, Brew Works is open seven days a week and serves both lunch and dinner. The Steelgaarden is the lounge area and features two pool tables, and really comfortable couches and sofas to kick back and relax. They serve more than 100 Belgian bottled beers as well as beer brewed right there on the premises.

Anylise’s Hava Java

Hava Java’s is a cool little café right across the street from the Civic Theatre, so it’s really convenient if you want to stop in after a show for some dessert. The desserts are really good, and it’s a perfect atmosphere for hanging out and chatting. They occasionally have live entertainment, but it tends to feel a little cramped when this is going on.

Borders Books

The café in Borders Books can be a fun place to hang out if you just feel like getting off campus. They have some really good desserts, a variety of hot and cold drinks, and obviously there are plenty of shopping opportunities when you’re finished.
