College Prowler Take

Muhlenberg is not particularly known for being a big party school, but that doesn’t mean that it’s all work and no play on campus either! It seems like a lot of students at Muhlenberg are perfectly content making their own fun with small groups of friends around campus or just hanging out in the dorms. For those who are looking for alternatives to this type of low-key entertainment, campus parties and clubs do offer a variety of other options. As students get older, these options become greater. At first, freshmen stick to the organized MAC events on the weekends. After the first couple of weeks, frats open their doors to freshmen, though it isn’t always easy for guys to gain access without knowing someone who lives in the house. After freshman year, the frats seem to lose their novelty for many (unless you are friends with the guys in the frat or have gone Greek yourself). House parties become more popular as you get to know more people who live in MILE houses, the new dorms, or off campus.

Once students turn 21, clubs and bars in the area become the choice destinations. While Allentown doesn’t have as many clubs as Philadelphia or New York, there are several places in the area that offer good drinks and entertainment. Crocodile Rock and Banana Joe’s are two of the most popular places for Muhlenberg students, and the Chicken Lounge offers great snacks. You don’t always need to be 21, and there are also quite a few coffee shops in the area.

I love going to Croc Rock with my friends because it offers a good variety. I go for the bands, and they go for the dancing.

Muhlenberg Activities Committee...

Muhlenberg Activities Committee (MAC) really tries to offer students alternatives to frat parties and just hanging in the dorm. They sponsor parties at least once a month, but whether you have fun at them really depends on what you’re looking for and if your friends go to them. Sometimes they can be pretty dead; if you bring a group of friends with you, they can be a lot of fun.

If I really want to go to a good club, I’ll go into Philly. If I’m just looking for something fun to do that will get us off campus, though, there are several clubs in Allentown that are fun and close.

Some people complain that Muhlenberg isn’t a big party school, but I definitely feel like you can make it what you want it to be. If you’re looking for a party, you’ll be able to find one. You can also have a great time just hanging out in the dorms. There are some bars and clubs in the area. A lot of people go to Big Woody’s because it’s really close, or the Chicken Lounge is good for drinks and nachos.

There really aren’t that many clubs in Allentown. I heard they just opened a club downtown, and there’s always Main Gate, which I’m not really a big fan of. I don’t really frequent the Greek parties, but Phi Kappa Tau’s are always fun because the brothers are all really cool. I usually end up just hanging out with friends because parties aren’t really my scene.

Facts

Club Crawler

While Muhlenberg isn’t located in the middle of a huge city, there are several clubs that are within a short driving distance. If you head into downtown Allentown, there are a few clubs within minutes of one another. Remember that Philadelphia is just over an hour away, so you can always head into Philly if you find the club scene lacking.

Bar Prowler

Bars are popular places to hang out because there are several that are really close to campus. You don’t need to be 21 to get into all of them either, so they can be good for mixed groups of friends. Some people can go to get drinks, and others can go just for the food and atmosphere.

Organization Parties

Muhlenberg Activities Council (MAC) sponsors parties/dances on campus all the time. They usually have at least one every month in Seegers; sometimes there are even more than this. These parties are whatever you make of them, and it really depends on the crowd that turns out. They can be pretty dead, but you can still have a good time if you go with a group of friends. Most of the people who go are freshmen, since they’re on campus and typically don’t have access to alcohol. Other groups on campus have their own parties, but these are usually at houses and aren’t nearly as publicized. Some campus-sponsored parties are BYOB.

Club Listings

“Croc Rock” offers a variety of types of entertainment because it has several different club floors, an outdoor patio, and a concert hall. The concert hall gets some big bands that you have to buy tickets for, but they also get some really good local bands that are included in the cover charge price. The ‘80s Retro Room plays your favorites from the ‘80s, and the Dance Downunder Club has a DJ who plays typical club music.

A lot of people don’t know about this club because it’s located in the Holiday Inn, but it’s cool because of its hours and no cover charge. They are open seven days a week and have a happy hour each weeknight, which can be pretty nice if you have random days off during the week. It’s more upscale than the other night clubs though, so proper dress is required.

Main Gate can be a popular spot for Muhlenberg students because it is so close to campus, and they sponsor Muhlenberg nights throughout the year. Some students complain that is has a somewhat sketchy atmosphere, but it can be fun, too.

The Chicken Lounge is a five-minute drive from campus, and it’s a popular place to go for snacks and drinks. It may seem sketchy from the outside, but it’s really quite cozy and relaxed once you go inside. You can sit at the bar in the center, or chill out at the tables and booths. They have a good variety of food on the menu, but most people will tell you that the nachos are a must for every Chicken Lounge outing!

This is a nice place to go for something different because it’s located in the Historic District of Bethlehem. It’s open seven days a week and serves both lunch and dinner, in addition to having a bar scene at night. The Steelgaarden is the lounge area and features two pool tables, and really comfortable couches and sofas to kick back and relax. They serve over 100 Belgian bottled beers as well as the beer that is brewed right there on premise.

What to Do if You're Not 21

Hava Java’s is a cool little café right across the street from the 19th Street Theatre, so it’s really convenient if you want to stop in after a show for some dessert. The desserts are really good, and it’s a perfect atmosphere for hanging out and chatting. They occasionally have live entertainment, but it tends to feel a little cramped when this is going on.
