College Prowler Take
Living off campus can be a great way to really enjoy the independence that comes with college life, and while this way of life is very appealing to some students, it is not for everyone. There are also disadvantages to getting out of the residence halls; with more independence also comes more responsibility. Also, Muhlenberg doesn’t make independent living convenient for its students. To live off campus, students are required to fill out an application and meet certain requirements; they must be in good academic standing with a GPA of at least 2.5 and attend a meeting during the spring semester. Even after doing this, authorization to live off campus is not guaranteed. Until students receive a letter of approval in the mail, they’re not permitted to sign a lease. Also, students are ineligible for future housing lotteries after going off campus.
Many Muhlenberg students choose to pick the option that falls right in the middle of dorms and off-campus housing. Muhlenberg Independent Living Experience (MILE) properties are Muhlenberg-owned, off-campus apartments and houses for students. The popular Tremont Apartments, part of MILE housing, are about a five-minute drive from campus. Students wishing to live in MILE houses or Tremont must also go through an application process, but it is not as difficult as the off-campus procedure. There are MILE places that are really beautiful and others that are not quite as desirable. Ultimately, living off campus is a matter of personal preference. Some students miss the luxury of being able to roll out of bed and make it to class in five minutes, and others love having more space and no RA.

The school does everything it can to keep you from living in housing that isn’t owned by them. The school doesn’t help you at all, and it is highly discouraged. |

Some of the MILE houses are really nice, but there’s always a risk that you’ll end up in one that isn’t desirable. I’ve never even considered living completely off campus; I love being able to walk to class in less than 10 minutes. |

Living off campus can be nice because you have more space, and it’s easier to make your own food. When I say off campus, I really mean MILE houses. I wouldn’t want to go through the hassle of living somewhere that wasn’t owned by Muhlenberg. |
