Quick Stats

Best Ways to Get Around Town
  • Bring a bike
  • Befriend those students who have cars
  • Take the Muhlenberg Shuttle
  • Wear comfortable sneakers
Best Ways to Get to the Airport The Muhlenberg Shuttle is a convenient way to reach the airport during breaks and vacations. However, if you can't use the shuttle or need the airport on a different weekend, either call a taxi or contact Steve Goosely (Shuttle Steve) at sgoosley@muhlenberg.edu or (484) 664-3449.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The Muhlenberg Shuttle is available to all students for free, so there is a means of escaping campus and exploring Allentown for those without a car. However, the shuttle's limited hours of operation and limited locations make students feel that owning a car, or having access to a friend's, is a necessity. Some locations are technically within walking distance (if you don't mind 20-minute strolls). Allentown does have a public bus system, but the nearest stops are at least a 30-minute walk away. However, on the days everyone is returning home for break or vacation, the Muhlenberg Shuttle does offer convenient access to both bus stations and the Lehigh Valley International Airport. While it may be difficult to get around town during the year, at least the shuttle helps make the trip home a little easier.

For the most part, Muhlenberg students avoid public transportation systems, considering the distance and inconvenience. Those students who have their cars on campus are burdened with extraordinary popularity. If one of those popularity-burdened people happens to be one of your best friends, you are in luck; otherwise, if all other choices fail, be prepared to use the shuttle or your own two feet.

Freshman can't have cars on campus, which is inconvenient, but you can pay for a yearlong membership to the student shuttle which runs twice a week to nearby places. After freshman year, chances are you or one of your friends will have a car which simplifies things. There are bus stations nearby that run to NYC and Philly, too.

Minimal Transportation Options

They only have transportation to stores on friday, saturday and sunday which is obviously not helpful when you run out of shampoo during the week. The school store is open which sells most things you need but they overprice everything. The buses run on a tight schedule when they operate so they will not wait for anyone. However, due to the recent local muggings, they have an extended shuttle service which yet again operates under a schedule. If you need a ride, campus safety MIGHT pick you up from wherever you are.

"Shuttle Steve"

As a freshman I used "Shuttle Steve" to get to local restaurants and Target. Getting picked up was easy but the pickup times were unreliable and not convenient. Since sophomore year I've had my car so I haven't used transportation in awhile, and I know they changed how it works this year.
