College Prowler Take
The beauty about athletics in reference to New College is that, unlike most schools that don’t have bustling sports teams and schools spirit, our student body just doesn’t care. There are no intramurals and only two intercollegiate teams. The ultimate Frisbee team is open to all. The girls’ soccer team also doesn’t have a strict tryout procedure. New College doesn’t attract the athletically inclined, so it doesn’t become an issue. People prefer alternative sports such as footbag (hacky sack), ping pong, and carrying heavy books to and from the library. Basketball games are held regularly, and the fitness center has its regulars. But overall, Novo Collegians are not big into sports. The fitness center always has people in it. The tennis courts are always used. Basketball games are played on an almost daily basis. The racquetball facilities are wonderful; there are two four-wall indoor courts and quality rackets. Lifeguards are on duty for the swimming pool, and there is a softball field. The athletic resources are there, they just don’t constitute much of the culture.

Still Undefeated
N/A
The only formalized sports team New College has is the sailing team. Anything past this is student run and intramural at best. We did have a flag football match against Ringling College earlier this year, but it ended in a draw at sundown, thus bringing the all-time NCF football record to 0-0-1.

Athletics are slim to nil if you...
Athletics are slim to nil if you compare us to UF or FSU. We have no football team. Yet, we have girls’ and guys’ soccer teams, softball, ultimate Frisbee, and fencing. There are also random dodgeball games sometimes and weekly basketball games. They’re usually non-competitive and more for fun than anything else, but athletics and outdoor activities are always going on here. |

I love the fact that New College...
I love the fact that New College football is undefeated in that we’ve never played it. There’s not a big push for having a full athletic division. In the master plan, there was a spot for a gym, but do we really need a gym? We do not put a lot of importance toward athletics as a community. We have a lot of community building activities that revolve around bikes. You can learn Kung Fu from a math professor, and you can fence. Those are the type of athletics we have here. |

We have dance, yoga, and all sorts...
We have dance, yoga, and all sorts of classes in the fitness center. We are starting a dance program soon. Capoeira was big a while ago, and so was belly dancing. Right now, ballet and Afro-modern are trendy. The instructors are always students. One time we had a Biology professor teach a ballet class, and that was cool. |

I don’t think we’re horribly...
I don’t think we’re horribly destroyed over the thought of not having competitive athletics. This school benefits from not having that type of competition. We’re already academically competitive enough without grades. We’re fighting against each other to be the best. We benefit from not having organized sports. |
FactsSchool Spirit
There is often a love/hate relationship with the school. The lack of large, organized extracurricular events makes it hard for people to show school spirit. However, most of the students who stick around are proud to be Novo Collegians, and they flaunt New College apparel. There is a lot of discussion about what it is to “be New College.” We have a lot of personal investment in the ideals and vision of the school.
