Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

New College students are either widely apathetic toward or supportive of the fact that there are no sports teams or official athletic programs. On the other hand, if students want to explore and/or partake in a specific sport, various informal programs exist: sailing club, flag football, soccer, basketball, tennis, racquetball, and fencing. There is also quite a high demand for dance and yoga classes, which are held in the fitness center aerobic room. NCF's version of athletics is very relaxed, inclusive, and casual. If there is a program you would like to start, students are often receptive to joining in. New College (typically) doesn’t attract the athletically inclined, so it doesn’t become an issue. People prefer alternative sports such as footbag (hacky sack), pingpong, and carrying heavy books to and from the library. Overall, Novo Collegians are not big into one's traditional idea of college sports.

The fitness center is very well attended, and the tennis courts are often in use. Basketball games are played on an almost daily basis. The racquetball facilities are wonderful; there are two four-wall indoor courts and quality rackets for student use. Lifeguards are on duty at the swimming pool, and there is a softball field. The athletic resources are available for those interested—they just don’t constitute much of the culture.

Almost None

We don't have much in the way of inter-collegiate athletics except for flag football, and we only play the art school down the road. We have a variety of inter-murals and some other options. Plus if there is something you want to do its easy to start it up yourself.

Almost Terrible

the sailing team is the only competitive sports team. Aside from that you only have pick up b-ball and flag football. A large majority of students are not athletic and don't have interest in sports.

School Spirit

Many enrollees strongly identify as being a part of the New College community. The lack of large, organized extracurricular events makes it hard for people to show school spirit. However, most of the students who stick around are proud to be Novo Collegians, and they occasionally flaunt New College apparel. Students have a lot of personal investment in the ideals and vision of the school.
