Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Strictness is not necessary in a community where members are intelligent and responsible. However, the New College bubble is not hermetically sealed, even though it might seem that way at times. Students are encouraged to report suspicious outsiders. There are no curfews. Nobody is ever scolded for keeping his or her room or mailbox unlocked. But when a non-student defaces property or hassles a student, the campus reacts with vengeance.

New College of Florida’s mission is one that trusts the individual. It is a student-centered school. The administration takes seriously grievances proposed by the student government. The rules are created in the most direct democratic fashion possible for an institution of higher education. Without this structure, New College wouldn’t be the way it is. The campus is safe. Few dangerous incidents occur. The longer this trend continues, the longer the student body will retain power over the affairs of its education and lifestyle. This freedom is rare and arguably impossible to grant at other schools.

Pretty Lenient

My impression of the campus police is that their aim is to protect the students and make sure everyone is safe, rather than just trying to find rule breakers and punish them. There have been some recent incidents where many students felt that the police acted unfairly or were unusually strict, seemingly at the request of the administration, but overall the school is pretty lax about most things. If you are being smart and careful then you should be ok.

The School Is Liberal on Most Subjects That Won't Get Them in Legal Trouble.

The school maintains strict safety rules concerning fire code, events, etc. But, they certainly follow the theory that an intelligent group of young adults can be trusted to make wise decisions. The people who can't handle that sort of freedom/trust responsibly, tend to drop out within the first 2 semesters. There is an understanding between the campus police and the students that everyone is there to maintain a safe environment and the localization of parties to a very small area prevents any safety issues with DUI's etc.

Pretty Much Like Amsterdam

Yea, there has been controversy lately over shutting down the "walls" at 2am, instead of 4am, but under most circumstances, you'll have an outlet to party. NCF is by no means a dry school. You're not gonna find frat parties, I guess... to be honest, I spend my Friday and Saturday nights in an altered state of mind with an intimate group of friends.
