College Prowler Take
As soon as wireless access is improved, New College’s computing facilities will be superb. There has never been a scenario where a student has been unable to find an available computer on campus. The Mac lab is close to the main dorms and provides free printing. Students have full access to the lab by swiping their ID card to enter. New College emphasizes writing, and accordingly most assignments for humanities and social science majors tend to be papers. For this reason, it is always beneficial for one to own a computer. The New College forum fosters a sense of community and is a reliable way to discuss pressing issues with fellow students. It is a message board that is special to New College, and it functions as a reliable way to promote events, request academic information, or ask fellow students to borrow anything from olive oil to printer paper. It functions as one of the primary means campus news is transmitted. It connects students in ways that few other schools can relate to. That being said, New College does not offer anything particularly special in the realm of computing. It has everything students need but nothing luxurious. Compared to more technologically oriented campuses, the computing facilities could be considered adequate.

Great Facilities, but Only as a Supplement to Your Own Computer.
B+
It's 2010. You need your own computer.
With that out of the way, the facilities are great. The library recently put in a new academic center with maybe 20 new computers, a bunch of conference tables, and some computers specifically for media editing. The Mac Lab offers free printing (BYO Paper) and is open 24/7 (The printer does jam from time to time, so just call the TA if that happens).
Wireless is in many places, but not 100%. All of the classrooms are covered, as are most of the buildings. The Pei complex just got total wireless coverage, and it's in the common areas of the letter dorms. Not sure about Dortstein or B dorm, but I'm sure it's in the lounge areas of all three.
One issue I have with the network is that they cap it (as of 2010) to 220 KB/s download. It's annoying, but Hulu and such work fine.

Our computer system is growing at an exponential rate. We are catching up really quickly. We’re playing catch-up from being the stepchild of USF. We were the last in the rung to get information infrastructure. Now that we’re independent, we’re getting our own funding. There has been a significant amount of investment in technology. We’re getting a new media server, and there is a push on the professor’s side to get training for Power Point, Excel, and other programs. |

There is no way you can get by without a computer. When I first came here, I thought the computer labs would be good enough, but that’s not the case. You’re going to be writing papers at all hours of the night when the labs are not open. Sometimes during peak paper writing times, there are a bunch of people who are already using a printer. You’re going to want a computer as a social tool, too. I recommend signing up for Facebook when you come here to get announcements for social events. |

The problem with the forum is the drama that happens. Sometimes people carry it over to real life and get really upset. Some people get reputations for being ‘forum whores.’ |

There is a steady drive to...
There is a steady drive to digitize the campus. Wireless is spotty. As far as IT goes, it’s a growing but fledgling department. They know Mac and Windows, but they know Windows better. The Media Center is growing and getting good really fast for the campus’ size. Within the next few years, we will be up to speed if not surpassing colleges of our size.” |
