Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There are no fraternities or sororities at New College, and there is nothing remotely analogous to them either. Novo Collegians stress community and inclusion. The lack of a prominent Greek scene is a common reason why prospective students choose New College over other schools. A group of male first-year Class of 2010 students tried to propose creating a fraternity only to be greeted with intense disapproval by the student body. New College never has and probably never will have anything resembling Greek Life.

There are no sororities or fraternities, and as far as I can tell, there is a strict effort to keep them away. That’s not just a New College concept—it’s a small liberal arts college concept. You can come here to make sure you never come in contact with Greek life.

When you walk around, you can often pick out the Nat Sci kids or the Lit kids. You generally know people’s AOCs or at least their divisions, even if they themselves don’t know it—even if you don’t know their name! The Nat Sci girls are really skinny and conservatively dressed. A lot of Archaelogy students are into Fetish Ball and kinky things. Lit kids are generally not good looking. I haven’t really been around sororities or fraternities, I would imagine there is a similar phenomenon of being able to recognize people by their affiliation to a larger group, even if you don’t know the individual person.
