Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

By pure statistics alone, one can easily see that New College is one of the safest campuses in the country. Few college campuses are home to unlocked doors, unattended laptops, and students walking alone in the middle of the night without fear. It is common for students to leave their supplies and books unattended in the library carrels. There is a communal feel on campus that gives one a sense of security and is attributed to the involved student body. The campus police don’t patrol the area looking to get people in trouble—they are friendly and will always help those in need. People feel at home at NCF.

In the rare instances when there are threats to safety, there are always RAs on duty who respond to calls promptly. There are also blue emergency call towers located all over campus, directly connected to the campus police. The lack of red tape at New College makes it easy to file complaints and discuss important matters with the administration. Speaking to a police officer is never daunting, and issues are treated seriously and respectfully. The relationship between students and campus police is overwhelmingly amicable and congenial—students all acknowledge that to ensure a safe campus, they must work together.

Police assault and aggravate students, students Baker Acted for no reason

Campus police have been violent to students, shoving them down and harassing them at parties.

Police have also stopped students driving on campus and searched their vehicles for drugs without probable cause.

A student was Baker Acted (forced to go to a mental institution and kept in solitary confinement) after telling the Health and Wellness Center she was fasting for spiritual clarity, a perfectly valid health practice.

There is little discourse on safe drug use, and attempts at distributing information by Students for Sensible Drug Policy was squashed. There is an effort to keep drug use hush-hush, which is very unwise as many students are experimenting with some serious research chemicals. With all the drug interest on campus, it would make more sense to have an academic class on drugs, but I have never heard of such a class being offered, although I have heard of such classes at other major universities.

There were students and townies who were Neo Nazis and rapists, and the campus police did little to make anyone feel protected and actually made students feel more afraid.

I felt very unsafe on campus and this motivated me to withdraw.

Safety

I feel very safe on campus. We have a lot of the blue emergency phones and police patrolling often. They are not there to bust the students so much as to keep them safe. The police are friendly and helpful. Campus crime is low, things are stolen, but mostly by townies and if you take the right precautions this is unlikely. Essentially, lock your bikes. That helps a lot.

Reasonably Safe - Have a Doctor on Call

As has been publicized in the past, the campus is no stranger to bike theft. I haven't heard of any recent incidents in which a student was harmed by someone other than themself. The police are very smart about handling large events, such as PCP (sometimes to the chagrin of older, more bitter students), in such a way that only invited guests attend; they are a positive force on campus overall. No shortage of blue emergency towers. The health and wellness center could use some work; I've often heard that they're understocked and that their employees are less than qualified.
