Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

While Sarasota has more to offer than most students will admit, Novo Collegians tend not to take advantage of these resources. Located on the west coast of Florida, there are beautiful beaches with silky, white sand within a 10-minute drive. The weather is always beautiful, so it is possible to go to the beach all year long. Right next door is the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art featuring treasured European paintings that date as far back as the 16th century. It is home to the Ca’d’Zan mansion, the spectacular house of John Ringling that is replete with beautiful antique decorations and furniture.

Downtown Sarasota is a 10-minute drive away and offers nothing exciting. It has several art galleries and ritzy shops, but it caters to the rich, old folk of Sarasota. On the way to downtown is the Ringling School of Art and Design. Students who get tired of being on campus sometimes drive to Tampa, which is an hour away. Some of the most popular things to do off campus include going to the movies at Burn’s Court or Parkway Cinemas. Burn’s Court is an independent movie theater that can be on the pricey side. Conversely, Parkway is a dollar theater that offers movies that just left the regular theater. It is a cheap way to justify “leaving the bubble,” as we call it. New College has a strong culture, and the majority of its students are proud of it.

OLD

EVERYONE IN SARASOTA IS OLD. Besides that, the beaches are amazing and the weather is great. Sarasota is also fairly close to Tampa and Orlando, which is convenient.

Atmosphere

I like the beach and growlers but the area is kind of boring other than that. Ringling is cool.

Arts in a Small City

Because of the large uppper-middle class elderly population in Sarasota, there are far more cultural events and activities than I expected. Right next door to school (literally), is the internationally renowned Ringling Museum and Arts complex, for which NCF students have free entry. I go at least once a week! There's also the Asolo Theater, the Opera House, and the Van Wenzel Performing Arts Center- all of which have 5-15$ rush tickets with a student ID.
